johnwolf Posted June 22, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted June 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm considering replacing my Voigtlander 50 1.5 with a different lens. I like its rendering but dislike its ergonomics. The Planar looks most promising and the price is right, but I'd like to ask about its contrast. I owned the Zeiss 35 but found it too contrasty for my taste, especially for BW work. Â I've got a pretty good feel for the 35. For those of you who have had the Zeiss 35 and 50, how would you compare their character and contrast? Thanks. Â John

efix Posted June 22, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted June 22, 2011 It's been a while since I had the 35 Biogon, but I believe the 50mm goes a little easier on that Zeiss look. I feel it is a little less contrasty than the 35, and has a little less of that magic Zeiss "3D pop", which is both probably due to the fact that the Biogons are highly corrected optical constructions, whereas the Planar is a simple, old-school, proven Double Gauss construction that exhibits slightly more spherical aberration -- to the positive, as I find. Â Btw.: I replaced my 50 Nokton with a 50 Planar as well, and I'm glad I did so. The Planar's rendering is just so much more interesting and pleasing (colour, contrast, 3D-ness etc.)
