ShotCapture Posted June 19, 2011 Share #261 Posted June 19, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) User error. 1) Put SD card in SD card reader. 2) Erase everything on above mentioned SD card by dragging all files and folders to trash or recycling bin, then DELETE ALL FILES FROM TRASH. 3) Look at your downloaded and unzipped file. Make sure the file ends in ****.upd and not ****.zip or anything other than upd. 4) Drag upd file onto blank card, NOT into any folder. 5) Take SD card out of reader, put in camera. If you follow these instructions EXACTLY and don't try any embellishments, it will work. (read the downloaded file by RIGHT CLICK with mouse. Your OS might hide the extension, so you might be naming file ****.upd.upd by accident since you don't see the extension, and it won't work.) If you can't follow these directions, ask a 9 year old kid. Followed exactly. Same error message "incompatable with my camera". Off to find a 9 year old. And waiting for a reply from Leica. You are not putting the unzipped file correctly on the SD card for some reason. You are doing something else. Do you know how to read file names and extensions? Read carefully at the "get info" part of the instructions and make sure your file only has one upd file extension. Why don't you write, in list form like I wrote, exactly what you are doing. Also, don't cut and paste if it says "drag". What is your computer and operating system? PS: You do have an M9 and not an M8, and you downloaded the correct file, yes? . And don't try to unzip an .upd file a second time, if your computer has already done so automatically. Checked, and used .upd as before. No luck yet. Thanks. Maybe we can figure out what common step is being screwed up and come up with a better way for the next update. Maybe some sort of check in the software or onscreen instructions that walk people through it. I'm just listening trying to figure out what is the point that people are screwing up. Mine went fine and I didn't reformat the card, didn't erase any pre-existing files(photos) left on the card. I even accidentally turned the camera off during the update while talking to my wife on the first try. I did put a new battery in. A low battery will keep it from reading the card. But, I'm pretty sure it gives you a low battery warning or something. Maybe, it doesn't always give the warning? Are you ejecting the card by right clicking the USB Icon in the lower right of the task bar before removing the card from the reader? XP caches the file and doesn't always write all of the file data to the card until you tell it to eject the card. I was convinced the red-edge problem with the 21 NON-asph and the 4/21 and 4.5/15 CV lenses had not improved with the new firmware. Well, my bad. And I mean my really bad. I was shooting a white wall, with the camera in "A" mode and +2 exposure compensation. Or so I thought. I failed to hit the "SET" button the second time after scrolling to +2. So yeah, my shots all looked very vignetted with color casts at the edges. That was because the camera was actually still on "0" exposure comp, and thus my shots were all underexposed 2 stops. In my [admittedly very weak] defense I never used exposure comp before, and rarely ever use A mode. But I just wanted to set the record straight. All the above lenses are definitely improved. Higher ISOs than 160 still show some red-edge, but probably 99% won't need Cornerfix. BTW, if anyone has a 1.9/28 CV lens, I found that the codes for the NON-asph Elmarits (both seem about the same) work very well, and lots better than the code for the 28 Summicron. Nothing wrong with firmware, it is the same for everybody, in all cases user error, need to slow down and try again, failing that take the camera to the dealer where camera came from and ask for help. It hurts me more than it hurts you] I mean, digital imagery is 50-70 per cent working with computers, even if you just want to look at the images and be able to find them a week later. Five years ago I was buying some memory cards from a favourite store on 9th Avenue. The salesman told me a story about his best customer: a well-to-do lady who never reused a card. Once full, she stored it, cross referenced it in a book, and put a new one in her camera. She used memory cards like film and never went near a computer. Doesn't that make you feel better? For example "I push the internet button to get online". But if you ask them about their browser, or what folder a downloaded file goes into, they are baffled. They don't understand basic computer operation, so anything that they haven't memorized throws them off completely. You can make the same analogy with photography. The average person who uses an all automatic DSLR or point and shoot camera knows how to push the button to take a picture. If a "Canon Rebel" user who keeps the camera on the "green automatic" setting all the time is told to "set the f-stop at 5.6 and shutter speed at 1/500th to compensate for backlighting", they would be totally confused, it would be like speaking to them in a foreign language. Imagine how confusing it would be to them to take their camera out of all program mode and try to set up a shot. You would get baffled responses just like people here who can't copy an unzipped file to the root directory of an SD card. They just don't comprehend the concept. It's alien. Double Negative Posted June 19, 2011 Share #280 Posted June 19, 2011 Okay, I did a bit more testing. The 2,8/25 Biogon ZM isn't perfect, at least coded as a 2/28 Summicron ASPH. Because of the framelines my particular copy brings up, it's coded this way - which isn't ideal. So... It's now usable out-of-the-box, but still has a very, very slight bit of red edging. Improved - but not perfect. When I send it in to Zeiss for a CLA I'll have them toss on the other flange and I'll be golden. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
