Expensive watches are for people who want to look rich.

To *really* wealthy people time is immaterial, things happen when they want them to.

Buy the M9P, invest the watch money until you don't need one.

I currently have m8,m6 and 28mm cron asph. What would you do in my shoes? Buy a new watch or buy an m9p?!?!?

Dear bentarrow!

Difficult question, depends if you wish to keep accurate time or take photographs!

I recently had the same kind of dilemma; getting a Richard Mille, or the M9 and a few lenses.

As it turned out, I opted for an Omega Seamaster Diver, and in addition an Omega Speedmaster co-axial.

Both beautiful mechanical watches!

Then I could get the Leica M9 + WATE, MATE ,SX21, Elmar 24, SX35 FLE, SX50, SX50 ASPH, SN50, NX50 0.95, SN75, SN90 + M8.2 and still some cash to spare!

It all depends if you like to photograph or keep accurate time, that is two entirely different things.

When enjoining photography, I have found that I don´t even need a watch!

Get your priories right, get the M9 and an Omega or a Swatch (that's the same thing)!

Best regards

Trond

That was similar to my dilemma one month ago... A new Noctilux or Rolex Daytona. I was three hours late to Leica Dealer so there was no choice..:)

Buy a new lens and used Rolex... both will go up in value.

I have a Rolex GMT Master 2 in really good condition to sell if that helps,Then you still have enough money for the new Leica.

Which is better value? A watch that lasts for ages or one you replace every few years? Same goes for shoes, cars, cameras.... most things!

German watches are typically made by craftsmen working in small firms. For a tempting selection, see:

I have used the two tone submariner for years and bashed it around so much it is an amazingly strudy watch which keeps its value too....but honestly speaking IMO if I was given the choice at the point I bought the watch I would have undoubtedly go for the M9P. Reason is a watch is a watch and the rolex is less accurate than the cheapest digital casio watch and requires servicing every 5-7 years to keep it in tip-top shape (if you bash it around like I do)...and the novelty of an expensive watch on your wrist wears off real quick not to mention you tend not to wear it to some places for security reasons. I am absolutely certain I will derive much more joy from an M9. there's simply no contest!

BTW I post this as my sub is in for servicing...$500 for maintenance and replacement of some supposedly worn out parts??!! It is making strange noises when I rock it haha...

Anyone truly into watches may know what this rose gold beauty is.

It is not my watch, I sold my collector watches long ago and used the money to complete my M kit. I kept one more practical watch to wear.

The watch in the attached photo is my friend Irakley's, one of only 6 in the world (if I recall correctly, maybe fewer).

We used it as part of a series of watch photos we are doing together in my studio ... the title of this one is "Time Machine" featuring the signature of H.G.Wells.

It was photographed with my Leica S2P and S120 Macro, and the original file is poster sized.

Oh, you poor thing. Perhaps you could sell your Lange und Sohne watches and get a Submariner? ;)

Are you the same small-luxury-world with the great photos of the Blancpain GMT with black rubber trim, from a number of years ago? Those photos were seriously urging me to get a Blancpain. I never did, although I handled the Fifty Fathoms Trilogy version. Lord, that was a gorgeous watch. But the thought of the service costs, service times and relative fragility of the movement held me back.

And on the topic of watches and cameras: one professional photog, who counts people like Walter Iooss Jr (Sports Illustrated) as his friends, said that Rolexes were pretty common watches with traveling photogs due to their hardiness and style.

Yes, it was! I bought a new submariner with ceramic bezel. I love it, no regrets. I dont see a point of investing money into a camera with old technology. I have decided to buy the watch now and wait for the M10.

If I buy the m9 right now, most likely I will sell that to buy the M10 later. So why repeat the process twice?

I am enjoying my m8 and m6. They take beautiful photos. Good enough for me :)

However, I will be picking up 50mm Summilux asph.

It is not about the quantity my friend. It is all about the quality. Isnt that the reason why we are all here? :)

The real dilemma seems to be, that you can't afford both together.

You should rethink your choice of camera and watchmaker brands.

Maybe a Canon and Swatch would fit perfect:rolleyes:

Bentarrow - congratulations on the new watch. The new Sub Date with ceramic bezel is gorgeous; while bigger than the previous model, the combination of maxi-dial, case and hands is superb. You'll be able to wear that watch for the next 20 years.

PS: Rolex - can´t afford because of (easy) valuation through foreigners, customers ...
