I'm considering the purchase of a Leica grip for my new X1, and looking for comments from current owners. The only photo's I've seen only show it alone and without the X1.

Would anyone care to post a photo of the pair, or chime in with comments regarding the grip?

Thank you,

Steve

"... or chime in with comments regarding the grip?"

Well, I bought the thing because the basic X1 is a little small for my hands: difficult to hold onto. It helped that quite a bit; it adds bulk in the right hand and depth to the camera.

My only criticism is that one must remove the grip to change batteries. Not a big deal, I suppose, but a grip could be designed so that the thing allowed a battery change with the grip installed

It looks cool, too. If one combines the grip with the external viewfinder, the combo is quite sharp. And thern, too, it has a red-dot.

I bought one and I always use it. Also, note that you can't put the X1 in the Leica case with the grip. Not a big deal for me since I never use a case.

Here's a picture of my X1 taken with my D-Lux 3 when I first bought it.

I've tried the grip and I've tried without. Personally, the most suitable combination for me is the Thumbs-Up grip and a Luigi case (with the little "bump"). The case's added thickness really helps the cameras ergonomics for me, makes it fit in my hand more naturally and of course, the thumbs-up greatly improves the handling. But I also know people who are disappointed by the thumbs-up. So...

If it's at all possible, you should go into a store and thoroughly try out all your options! That's the only way to know for sure, what works/doesn't work for you.

I think you have to try all options over a period of time , in the field , using the

camera to really understand what will suit you best.

Im with Eddie on the Luigi with the wee grip as it looks and feels great , i also

sometimes use the handgrip in conjunction with an ever ready case.

I've got one, but always forget to put it on... it's nice but the camera feels fine in my hands without it too...

Mine lives on the camera and has done since Day 1. It is a perfect optional accessory which transforms the ease of use of the camera and adds considerable security of tenure.

I used the camera for a few months before I got the grip and consider the grip a big improvement. For me, it gives the camera some much-needed heft - it's just too light without it. Also, with the addition of a wrist strap it enables you to shoot one-handed. Also gives some protection to the base of the camera.

Here's a shot of mine with strap and "half case" (half of the ever-ready case)

I LOVE the grip. It goes perfectly with a wrist strap for quick-access action and control. i went one step further and bought one of those auto-open lens covers so now i dont have to play around with the lens cap either. anything that you can do to speed up the time from when you're inspired to take a picture to when you actually do is key - the wrist strap, auto-open lens and the sturdy hand grip all do their part really well for me.

Used my new X1 naked (the camera not me) last weekend - found it a bit small for my hands.

I've now added an Artisan and Artist Half Case and already it feels better. Will try this (partially clothed) combo for a while to see if I also need a Thumbs Up.

The deciding factor for me was the bangs per buck. Thumbs Up is about the same price as Artisan and Artist Half Case, but the Half Case adds protection as well as improving the grip.

Usually have the camera dangling from a wrist strap so I'm always worried about it swinging into a wall or something - hence the case.

Just my 10 cents as they say . . .

I bought the Leica grip mostly to protect the bottom trap door covering the battery and card. The door seemed kind of fragile to me. I find the shortened grip ( doesn't come all the way to near the top of the camera) takes a bit of getting used to.

My system: Tamrac holster hanging from my belt. The handle grip provides quality holding.

I have a grip and find it to be very helpful. I also have a grip on my M6. However, I can neither recommend or discourage the use of a grip. It is too much a highly personal thing. Any camera you use should feel like a natural extension of your hand. The only why to know if a grip is right for you is to try one. Go to a photo store and ask to test drive one, or order one from Amazon where you can return it if you don't like it. ;)

Does Artisan and Artist make a case specific to the X1?

Yes they do. They make one which has a small bulge to aid grip and another which accommodates the camera if you have the Leica Grip fitted.

Got mine from Red Dot Cameras in London. Link is extremely long but look on their web site under Leica Digital Compact > Accessories.

You might want to consider a half-case which will also have a built-in grip and offer some protection. Can be had for about the same price as a Leica grip ~$100+. Different strokes for different folks. Choose your own color.

I bought one but don't really recommend it. My problem is more on tHe back of the body than the front.

I bought a thumbs up and LOVE that... With or without the grip... But to be honest I rarely use the grip because of the bulk. For me, one of the best things about the X1 is it's size.
