Advertisement Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Hi Washington, Take a look here New pic of Seal's M. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted June 6, 2011 Share #22 Posted June 6, 2011 Seal used to be Forum member and, I suppose if he still is, will be disappointed by your inability to recognize a fellow Member. Sorry, how would 'Washington' know Seal is/was a member here? His username (I can't remember it now) isn't obvious and he isn't a regular contributor. I don't think he'd be disappointed at all, I don't think he'd honestly care at all.
Washington Posted June 6, 2011 Share #23 Posted June 6, 2011 Honestly, I have never heard of the guy. Personally, I don’t listen to popular music. I’ll take a good blue-grass band and really enjoy it.
Philinflash Posted June 6, 2011 Share #24 Posted June 6, 2011 Sorry, how would 'Washington' know Seal is/was a member here? His username (I can't remember it now) isn't obvious .... I was not trying to chastise poor "Washington" for his lack of encyclopedic knowledge of Forum Members; I was just trying to make the point that Seal is not an alien being and more related to "us" than might otherwise be assumed. As for tracking him down, it really is not too hard for anyone using the advanced search function available here in the Forum with a willingness take a guess about his user name. And your assumption, James, about his postings recently is entirely correct as it seems his most recent was on Christmas 2009. Presumably, he has better things to do. Ecaton Posted June 6, 2011 Share #26 Posted June 6, 2011 Ok, ok…. if the guy really is a series photographer and the camera isn’t just bling….I take what I said back. Allegedly, he is a paid ambassador for Leica. Read his most recent rants on Steve Huff's web page were the "ambassador" attacks posters who dare criticising Leica. I only hope this was not Leica talking through its "ambassador", but rather an emotional singer not being up to his new task in the corporate world. From one of Seal's last nights posts/rants on Steve Huff's web page : ".............................Theo there’s the bickering about Leica bumping up the price again for this new mystery camera, if it’s too expensive for you or you don’t agree with Leica’s pricing policies then DON’T BUY ONE! I represent Leica and am paid to do so. I do it not because I need the money, I do it with pride so it really ticks me off when people jump to conclusions about pricing, what Leica should or shouldn’t be concentrating on, how the M9 or X1 isn’t worth the money or how Leica better watch their backs because Fuji are doing this with X100 or whatever. They are a small company who make the best glass in the world, they also make a damn good box with which to mount that glass. In truth NONE OF YOU know what Leica’s business model or strategy is, no one knows why they price certain things the way they do. I do have an insight into how the company works as it’s part of my position as their global ambassador to know this information, that said they are trying REALLY HARD to bring new products to the market for us to enjoy. Do any of you think that companies like Fuji, Canon and the likes are years ahead of Leica with their bells, whistles and whizz-bangs? Well Sölms is full of brilliant minds who innovate all the time, they just don’t yield to the uninformed demands of the masses like other company’s do, instead they opt for the fundamentals needed to MAKE BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS, THAT’S IT!. Incidentally Leica invented the AF system, had the patent for ages and because of one guy who was misleading the company, they sold the patent to Canon because this one guy was of the opinion that “auto-focus was for idiots and who ever heard of such a stupid idea”. However this is not a reflection on the rest of the great minds who work their asses off in this company. There are lots of factors that go into bringing product to market for us all to enjoy and those factors get even more heavy when your company is small and has a history of excellence to keep living up to as does Leica. So it’s simple, if you have issues with what Leica do then don’t frigging buy any of their equipment! We get it…it’s not for everyone, but then just stop bickering and spurting negative crap about them and just get something else. Despite what anyone thinks or says, Leica products are for those who seek the elite. YES, I said elite and that’s one of the reasons why their prices are extraordinarily high. If that policy doesn’t work for you then it’s cool, it’s not the end of the world as there are plenty of choices." I hope this is not Leica speaking through its ambassador

Sorry, but why do you get to dictate that we should all behave according to this edict? Why should people have to accept anything and everything that *any* company does as beyond reproach, or have to turn their back on them completely? I use a load of Canon gear, but I'd be lying if I thought it was perfect, or if I wasn't a bit cross with some of their choices and priorities at times. Does that mean I should drop Canon too? Some of us, perhaps especially those who need their gear to make them money, have demands we place on our gear and so have cause to bicker and complain at times - it seems your ideal is not free discussion, but blind worship. Read my post, please, this is not what I'm saying. Leica's ambassador, Seal, posted this on another forum. And if he spoke in a capacity as Leica's voice, I find his attitude inappropriate to say the least. However, to give him the benefit of the doubt, let's say he spoke as a Leica fan ranting on a bad day.

Washington Posted June 7, 2011 Share #31 Posted June 7, 2011 Philinflash, First of all I am not ‘’poor’’ anything. Secondly, I had never heard of the guy as I have already stated. So, how in the world would I know anything about him? Thus, why should I care? End of subject.
M. Valdemar Posted June 7, 2011 Share #32 Posted June 7, 2011 It's interesting that they pick this character to be their "global ambassador". Lord Fluff Posted June 7, 2011 Share #35 Posted June 7, 2011 It's interesting that they pick this character to be their "global ambassador". Does he represent the ideal Leica customer? A nouveau-riche member of the fashionista jet-setting "elite" who wears his camera like jewelry with his model wife? To me, he's just another repugnant status symbol wielding cretin to be avoided. Is this the demographic that Leica marketing thinks is buying the equipment? Good God. Sorry, but who exactly do you think buys a Titanium M9 or a Nocti 0.95? Jobbing snappers? Ordinary working folk? roydonian Posted June 7, 2011 Share #36 Posted June 7, 2011 “I represent Leica and am paid to do so. I do it not because I need the money, I do it with pride so it really ticks me off…” Leica *pays* someone with the sort of attitude displayed in this ill-tempered rant and with an inability to compose a logical argument on line without ‘shouting’ in all-capitals ? If I used the word ‘frigging’ in public when representing one of my clients, I’d almost certainly find myself with one client fewer. Sorry, but who exactly do you think buys a Titanium M9 or a Nocti 0.95? Jobbing snappers? Ordinary working folk? Can’t speak of its f0.95 incarnation, but how about the original f1 Noctilux? I’ve got one, but would classify myself as a member of the ‘ordinary working folk’. Did I really need it? No - it was a luxury I allowed myself to celebrate a new job. Do I use it? Yes, there is something about the imagery it produces, even when stopped down, that I really like. Best regards, Doug
earleygallery Posted June 7, 2011 Share #37 Posted June 7, 2011 If that rant is by the real 'Seal' (I can't find it myself) then firstly Leica should think about how they want him to communicate. As he's a singer I find his use of language surprising to say the least! Not very lyrical.... If he wants Leica to become an even more elitest product perhaps he should insist that he pays for his cameras/lenses, instead of accepting gifts from Leica, it's not like he can't afford them! (OK the argument will be that they are payment in kind, but would you pay for that sort of publicity?!). That's also a dangerous path to tread. Everyone knows Leica are expensive, but that's because the assumption is that they are superb products, partially hand made, finest quality lenses etc. If the perception that they are expensive for the sake of being expensive, to appeal to those seeking a status symbol, then the inherent appeal of the product will wane. wattsy Posted June 7, 2011 Share #38 Posted June 7, 2011 Dr K. wouldn't be the first in Leica's management to be attracted to celebrity. The previous regime also cultivated a long marketing relationship with the singer Bryan Adams. I suspect that the current infatuation with Seal is less a direct attempt to appeal to the St. Tropez nouveau riche set (I would have thought that such efforts are ultimately self-defeating) and more a bunch of nerdy businessmen hoping that a bit of OK magazine 'glamour' might rub off on them. I also strongly suspect that it is the singer's wife who is the actual attraction - it just happens to be handy that she has a well known husband with an existing interest in the company's products. efix Posted June 7, 2011 Share #39 Posted June 7, 2011 Ah, lovely to see how everyone has an opinion on the internet. There is hope yet for mankind. Which reminds me of this: http://xkcd.com/386/
Ecaton Posted June 7, 2011 Share #40 Posted June 7, 2011 If that rant is by the real 'Seal' (I can't find it myself) then firstly Leica should think about how they want him to communicate. It's on Steve Huff's webpage, under the thread: "The New Leica M9-P?". Seal uses the ~6 symbol. Click on it and you will be redirected to his webpage. I couldn't care less what he thinks as a private person, but if he believes to speak this utter nonsense in a capacity as Leica's voice, than I do have a problem with it. And hopefully somebody else in Solms as well.
