Bob,

may I wholeheartedly thank you for your words? I happen to be italian and to deeply love my country in spite of its countless issues.

Oh, and I wish you a pleasant time here.

Cheers,

Bruno

Just got back from 3 days spent in... Milan, of all cities.

There were hundreds of tourists, some with huge DSLRs and mega-zoom lenses.

My M9 was barely looked at, except on a couple of occasions the day I decided to use the Perar. The tiny lens generated some curious glances - that's all.

We are presently traveling from the US to Italy, starting in Rome, then off to Capri, Positano, Ravello, then off to Florence, then biking through Tuscany and finishing off in Venice. I have died and gone to heaven. Italy is wonderful and the Italian people hold a special place in my heart. I have already filled up a 16gb sd card and my vacation has barely begun. Take your M9, enjoy Italy to the fullest but most of all stop and appreciate how wonderful the people are. Paranoia has no place in this beautiful land.

If In Doubt, take a DL4 or 5...A vacation is only as good as you make it, relax, enjoy the city:- take a P&S...

On my recent Euro trip (April 2011) I just used my X1, DL4 was in the bag as a backup..

I was very vigilant for the first few days, then I thought, go for the pictures & enjoy..

As already stated, take the usual travel precautions, don’t flash your camera around & stay out of dark corners & side streets...I usually after taking say 20 or 30 images go into a coffee shop & review them rather than reviewing in the street...I can always go back and retake if needed...enjoy your vacation........;)

I live in Brixton and regularly go walk around with 2 M9's. what is wrong with you people. maybe we should all stay locked in our houses taking pictures of the cat

The other poster mentioned Neasden, near where I live, which I've always found quite safe. Conversely a close friend of mine left Brixton after the second occasion on which he was mugged, at knifepoint, for his phone and wallet - both occasions being on or near the high st, and during daylight.

I just took a tour to Greece with my M9. The agency wanted about $400 each from my wife and I to insure the trip.

You need to shop around a little! We've never paid more than £100/yr for worldwide travel insurance, and in fact my wife now gets cover for both of us free by virtue of paying a small amount for a 'Gold' bank account.

Even my pro cover, gear and third party, costs less than you $400, and that's yearly.

I was in Milan for three days last year and when the taxi dropped us off near Moska (Moscow) tube station he said that we should be ok as we were in the safer part of town.....

That said, I carried lots of gear with me constantly over the three days and never felt unsafe or threatened in any way. That has been my experience in all European cities that I have visited.

The only time I felt uneasy was when I was in Boston many years ago and my mate told me not to cross a certain street as it was deemed unsafe. I saw a couple of characters and did feel uneasy but nothing happened. I have been mugged twice at knife point in South Africa, my home country, but that was in the 'bad' part of town. Because of these two experiences I am a bit hyper when it comes to my personal safety....

What is safe?

Is such a thing possible.... anywhere....with a M-9 or not?

Do drug needing muggers really know what a Leica is, or are they totally

opportunistic for anything?

Therefore, to the question I answer: absolutely not.

There is no such thing as safe anywhere I know of.

Stay safe folks. Yup!

Never got any Problems with the M8 in any City I visited, nor in Milano.

Take the M with an Y-strap to the site of your Body, maybe under your jacket an take any Photo you like. Milano is worth your photos!

"Don't worry, be happy..." You bought the camera for enjoyment. Enjoy it! The more you "make" it appear expensive, the more a victim you appear. Relax. If you are worried, get some insurance. If you don't feel safe with your camera in a certain part of town, do not go there unless you don' t have a choice. In that case, bring a Colt .45, not a Leica:)!

I am envious as it has been a couple of years since I was on the Neopolitan coast. In Ravello I recommend the Hotel Parsifal. Make sure you arrive in Positano by boat...
