Is it safe to take M9 to Milan

Yes.

It's no different from any other big city with lots of tourists. And a small number of people who want to steal stuff from you. Like New York, or London, or Berlin, or your home town.

I've been to Berlin this week. Only one person noticed my M9. It was a man whose father also had a Leica camera. Because of the Luigi case he didn't' even notice it was a digital M9.

But although I'am always careful with my stuff. I'am glad it is ensured! Especially in a full elevator!;)

I was in Rio de Janeiro for a meeting last month. The big question was if it's safe to take my M9. All informations I got were warnings like:

- don't wear a watch

- don't go to Copacabana

- don't catch a cab on the street

- don't get out of your hotel

- don't go to old town

And things like: "You or your wife are going to be kidnappet, you'll be robbed because you can afford a cab."

We tried to behave and dress natural. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful cities on earth. So much wealth and adversity at the same time. A beautiful nature and climate. Great fruits! At the end we did everything that we were warned about, exept I only had my d-lux 4 with me. The next time I'll have a chance, I'm going to take my M9. And I'll do a guided tour through the favellas.

This thread got me so scared that today I left my Leica home in the vault and went

out with my MkIII Ds so nobody would notice me and bop me on the head. Really.

Silly picture of the mountain snow melt with five hand held exposures and …. that awful

HDR stuff. Gee, dirty sensor too…. should I send it back to Japan?

Sorry, Rip, Leica images only...

SNIP:

I like Antonio Carluccio's quote about his home country.

"God looked down at Italy and it was just too beautiful. He had to do something to achieve balance.... so he made the Italians" ;-)

I heard that joke about 35 years ago from a Brazilian, about Brazil.

BTW, I have taken my M( to Brazil without any problems. My (now sold) 5D attracted a lot more attention ....

And all that advice is rubbish. We've been to Rio on holiday three times, and nothing has happened to us. Three rules: be sensible and streetwise; don't wear expensive watches or jewellery; don't walk on the beach at night. That's all. Otherwise, go where you like, and enjoy it. It really is one of the most beautiful cities on earth, and Brazilians are very friendly if you are friendly to them.

In the many, many weeks I've spent in the main cities of Italy, the only reaction I've ever had to my black M6 (my M9's not been there yet) has been the occasional friendly compliment - "nice camera", that sort of thing.

The one I remember most clearly was in Rome when a young guy broke off an enthusiastic clinch with his dark-haired girl-friend to say to me as I walked past - "Hey man - cool camera" before getting back to business. Made my day, for some reason.

Enjoy.

So, when he stole your M6, you stole his girl?

This story is in US, and add nothing to the original topic but I happened to remember.

I am working the project documenting Cabrini-Green in Chicago known as bad neighborhood for decades. I am using M8 and M9 with fully insured before starting the project just in case. The M8/9 letters and badges are covered by black tape.

One day, the old person who is always with the bottle of alcohol on street said to me "it is Leica" with smile. I had never anticipated people in this area will recognize my Leicas. I did not scared, but I was moved. He said he liked photography when he was young and made photos. I learned I had wrong prejudices.

He is one of few person who noticed my Leica and talked on Chicago streets for two years..

Thank you all i went to Milan no one bothered me took a bunch of pictures only problem is it was kinda heavy to carry around!

Glad you and your M9 are save:D

Heavy ? Carrying a M9 around? Do you own the rare concrete version of the M9?

Sorry! If it was a Nikon D3s or a Canon 1D MKxx i could understand your remark, but a M9 heavy?

I'm glad everything turned-out alright.

The OP got a lot of advice in this thread, some of it sarcastic and much of it patronizing. Although essentially irrelevant, someone mentioned that Janan is a female M9 user, and therefore I think the comment about the weight of the camera could go uncriticized imho. No need for yet another disparagement of other cameras in comparison to a Leica.

Milan, New York and Japan.

Reminds me of walking into a flash coffee house in Berlin where a teenage Japanese kid was sprawled over a settee - apparently this made him look cool. His fawning new found girlfriend sat primly nearby. She asked "How did you get here?" "Well huh y'know like, I came from Noo Yok and in a few days I'm going like to Toke Yo."

"Oh that's so cool, I love Toke Yo."

It turned out, unsurprisingly, that she'd never been there. I wanted to warn her just in case she got an M9, not to take it to any of these places.

Vivian Stanshall would have known how to say it better.

I am going to milan next week for work and was wondering if its safe to take my M9 with me or should i just leave it at home and take the D-Lux4?

i find it best to buy 100 percent replacement insurance then forget about it. Just take normal percautions. You bought that wonderful camera to take pictures. seems a shame to leave at home. if stolen, you are covered for a new one. Just make sure that your memory cards are not stored with the camera.
