Leica M8 vs Canon 5D

Regarding quality of the 50 1.2L, results I've seen are anything but disappointing. A friend of mine, who also owns an M9 and 50 Summilux asph, has the 5DII and 50 1.2L. He took both systems to Iceland for a recent trip, and the large prints from the Canon were surprisingly (to me) good.

Well my own comparison of the 50/1.2L and 50/1.4 'lux asph leaves me in no doubt as to which lens performs better at 1.4. Stopped down is something of a different story..........

Apart from weight and size, optics are decisive, or should be for your choice. I would not go blind on an Elmarit 28 which in my opnion is not a true Leica character lens and purely optically I might prefer the Canon 50/1.2. So this is not the pair which can be easily decided upon, in an absolute sense. If it would be 35 S'cron IV I would definitely go for the Leica set.

I use both 5D1 and M8.2, not the same beasts at all. Full frame and crop cams have not the same DoFs as you know. And only you can say if you need a rangefinder or not. BTW if you're in a budget, why buying an expensive collector's like the White Edition? Regular M8.2 can be had at interesting prices, better spend on good lenses IMHO.

Well, if you can find me a spanking new M8 (one of the last ever made) with full warranty, in unopened box for $2500, please let me know! I don't care about the color, but I must say the price is great, silver, black OR white...

I had a 5D-I along with my M8, now I have the M9, and I still use the M9 only for travel. In my 40 yrs with the Leica I've never not also maintained an SLR system. Having one or the other would be like trying to get along with either just a pair of wingtips or just a pair of sneakers. Doable perhaps, but why? If left with no other recourse, I suppose I'd keep the 5D, for the versatility, and for the affordability of lenses in the future. Leica has left me in the dust on that one.
