pgk Posted June 1, 2011 Share #21 Posted June 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Regarding quality of the 50 1.2L, results I've seen are anything but disappointing. A friend of mine, who also owns an M9 and 50 Summilux asph, has the 5DII and 50 1.2L. He took both systems to Iceland for a recent trip, and the large prints from the Canon were surprisingly (to me) good. Well my own comparison of the 50/1.2L and 50/1.4 'lux asph leaves me in no doubt as to which lens performs better at 1.4. Stopped down is something of a different story.......... Advertisement Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Hi pgk, Take a look here Leica M8 vs Canon 5D. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Mikael Siirilä Posted June 1, 2011 Share #22 Posted June 1, 2011 Now I'm lusting for a silver 50mm Summilux ASPH:) Go for it! When I got my Summilux 50mm ASPH I finally realized what the Leica appeal is all about. Its the one lens I will not depart with! -- Mikael Siirilä mikael.siirila.net www.flickr.com/photos/mikaelsiirila/
otto.f Posted June 1, 2011 Share #23 Posted June 1, 2011 Apart from weight and size, optics are decisive, or should be for your choice. I would not go blind on an Elmarit 28 which in my opnion is not a true Leica character lens and purely optically I might prefer the Canon 50/1.2. So this is not the pair which can be easily decided upon, in an absolute sense. If it would be 35 S'cron IV I would definitely go for the Leica set. lct Posted June 1, 2011 Share #24 Posted June 1, 2011 I use both 5D1 and M8.2, not the same beasts at all. Full frame and crop cams have not the same DoFs as you know. And only you can say if you need a rangefinder or not. BTW if you're in a budget, why buying an expensive collector's like the White Edition? Regular M8.2 can be had at interesting prices, better spend on good lenses IMHO.

Well, if you can find me a spanking new M8 (one of the last ever made) with full warranty, in unopened box for $2500, please let me know! I don't care about the color, but I must say the price is great, silver, black OR white...
lct Posted June 1, 2011 Share #26 Posted June 1, 2011 You must be kidding are you? This is the price of a black or chrome second hand M8.2. The White Edition is much more expensive.
Clandrel Posted June 1, 2011 Author Share #27 Posted June 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, Find me a M8.2 for that price with warranty. /c
lct Posted June 1, 2011 Share #28 Posted June 1, 2011 I am confused. You referred to a 'fantastic' price you've been offered for an M8.2 "White Edition". Is that price $2,5K really?
Clandrel Posted June 1, 2011 Author Share #29 Posted June 1, 2011 Sorry, I misundestood you. As I said, I pay $4500 including the 28 Elmarit and the leather strap. The Elmarit retails for $2000 alone, so "around" $2500 for the camera. /c
lct Posted June 1, 2011 Share #30 Posted June 1, 2011 Sorry i did not see that you've got the kit for $4.5K already. Yes it is a good price indeed, even a fantastic one if you've got the kit new, given that it was sold for $8.5K less than two years ago. wilfredo Posted June 4, 2011 Share #31 Posted June 4, 2011 Clandrel, Congratulations. Post some pictures. I have both cameras but I have a special love affair with the M8.
bocaburger Posted June 4, 2011 Share #32 Posted June 4, 2011 I had a 5D-I along with my M8, now I have the M9, and I still use the M9 only for travel. In my 40 yrs with the Leica I've never not also maintained an SLR system. Having one or the other would be like trying to get along with either just a pair of wingtips or just a pair of sneakers. Doable perhaps, but why? If left with no other recourse, I suppose I'd keep the 5D, for the versatility, and for the affordability of lenses in the future. Leica has left me in the dust on that one.
