Is there a best marketplace for used Leica

Hi all.

Do you have used equipment markets (e.g. eBay) that you will and won't buy from. Is one or more channel to be avoided at all costs, or are you comfortable buying from all. Will you only buy from a used Leica specialist and do you consider you are paying a premium to do so?

Will you then use the same channel when you sell or again are there those that you avoid when that time comes?

Regards.

The buy/sell section on this forum is a good place to start!

Dealers provide a warranty so it's expected to pay a little more in general than buying privately.

Ebay is fine for buying if you know what you're looking for, and take the usual precautions buying or selling to avoid scammers and people trying to shift gear that has 'issues'.

I never sell on eBay any more and rarely buy from there. It's got to be a complete bear pit, their charges are getting ridiculous and there are far too many scammers and time wasters.

The Buy and Sell section of this forum is far preferable, partly because it supports the forum ;), but also because you can generally trade with people who are specifically interested in Leica and who you may well have come across in normal day-to-day forum activities.

Agree with Andy on Ebay- however I have recently sold some surplus glass to Far Eastern buyers at surprisingly high prices, so did not really mind their fees & charges too much, which are starting to approach Christies in London at times!

I have had really excellent experiences buying from sellers on the Forum, but find Ebay useful for general knicknacks and specialist items due to the size of their listings.

Unexpectedly, the biggest bargains I bought over the past 18 months were from Meister Camera in Hamburg and Berlin, followed by KEH in the US.

I bought several lenses, accessories, etc. on the bay in the past - including some fairly expensive gear. The only issue was with a Jupiter 3 lens (beautiful, but the diaphragm blades were jammed - in the end, this was covered by the buyer protection insurance). Most other items were often better than expected. Just my lucky experience I guess...

I would buy lenses on eBay if directly sold from a Leica user and not from a dealer. I did buy a few in the past when the picking was good. Approximately 5 years ago, before the M8 came out, they could be bought for next to nothing. Well, I am exaggerating of course but I bought a like-new Noctilux for $1,900. I thought it was expensive back then but as it turned out, I did OK there. My recent purchase there was 6-7 months ago and the price was only OK, again, from a direct user. I am using the lenses and not for investment.

Now, there are a lot of resellers, mostly in Asia, that price selected Leica lenses 30-40% higher than the actual retail price in the US. The problem is selected Leica lenses are not readily avaialble :(.

I could have written this myself except that my only problem case was an Industar and not a Jupiter and the seller refunded money and postage. As you say: "Most other items were better than expected."

IMPRESSIVE PICS ON YOUR SITE!

I would buy equipment from eBay as long as seller offer return policy. Then I can try it with small return fee. I bought one lens and and happy with it. But for selling, I hesitate to use there because of 8% fee.

But rest of my equipment was purchased from official Leica dealer regardless it is new or used. I think finding your own Leica dealer is good in the long run.

My Leica dealer is really nice and I can test used lens for a week and decide to buy or not. Price is always same or even lower than on eBay or somewhere else.:)
