jlancasterd Posted February 2, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had another look at 'Red Wheels' and decided that they might look better in monochrome... Opinions...?
Advertisement Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Hi jlancasterd, Take a look here Grayscale Wheels. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
spylaw4 Posted February 2, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 2, 2007 They were nice in red ....but this is much better IMO. Very good photo.
johnwolf Posted February 2, 2007 Share #3 Posted February 2, 2007 John, Both are wonderful, but the BW is very striking and its tonality better expresses the industrial theme for me. If I were to hang one on my wall, it would be the BW. Great job on the conversion. What's your preferred method? John

If I were to hang one on my wall, it would be the BW. Great job on the conversion. What's your preferred method? John Hi John Thanks for the comment. I think I prefer the monochrome version myself - the mixed lighting in the colour version was a little odd (dull winter daylight plus fluorescent plus mercury vapour IIRC). My 'preferred' method of conversion, insofar as I have one, is to desaturate in CS2 and then adjust contrast and brightness to taste... I've thought about getting one of the recommended pieces of 3rd party software, but I don't really do enough conversion to be able to justify the expense. (I'm supposed to be saving for an M8...) jlancasterd Posted February 2, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted February 2, 2007 They were nice in red ....but this is much better IMO. Very good photo. Thanks Brian I must say it made a change being in a railway workshop where there was room to move around and plenty of light, even in mid-winter - although it was very mixed (dull daylight + fluorescent + mercury vapour IIRC) hence the rather odd-coloured highlights in the Red Wheels version. In the workshops at my usual stamping ground ( the Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales) there are few windows and cats remain unswung...
Peter41951 Posted February 2, 2007 Share #6 Posted February 2, 2007 I think they look equally good, though each gives a different impression; the mono conversion has worked really well.
stuny Posted February 2, 2007 Share #7 Posted February 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) John - I too prefer this version. The other colors (such as the yellowed areas) were more distracting rather than contributing to the photo's impact.
samwells Posted February 2, 2007 Share #8 Posted February 2, 2007 Yes - I go for the b&w version...very nice...somehow it just looks more heavy and metallic...suits the subject very well. cheers: Sam
azzo Posted February 2, 2007 Share #9 Posted February 2, 2007 Definitely the b&w version as it goes much better with this subject, IMHO. Nicely framed and captured John. Azzo
