Can I Borrow Your Fine Leica Minds?

I totally agree with Tony, Sell off the case and weeks, months or years later you'll look at your collection and think "Gee, I used to have a beautiful, original Leitz case to protect and display these in. Why oh why did I sell it?" I know I'm being presumptive but a case in that condition would be hard to replace. As far as a 50mm lens is concerned, I bought a Russian copy Elmar (Industar 22 or similar) lens to fill in until I could save for the real thing. Good Luck, David

I couldn't agree more - several years ago I bought my '37 Leica II but couldn't afford a lens, so I bought an old FED camera and used the lens off of that until I had enough for the Red Scale Elmar. I've now got a few other bits and pieces, but I'm glad that I could use the camera with a cheap lens and then save up. Don't split your collection unless you really have to!

Cheers,

David.

Ha :D If you wanted to get me away from digital completely you'd have to pry the Canon from my cold, dead hands :)

I've a Nikon D40 which I've had about two years and it's a fine camera but I made the massive mistake of buying an M3 and rigid summicron earlier on this year and have rarely used the Nikon since.

Once you've had some film developed you'll not go back to digital, the whole process is totally different-from loading the film to selecting your shots & light etc-plus Leica lens are unbelievable, the summicron is certainly the best lens I've ever owned.

The M3 is everything that you've ever read or heard about and then some, modern cameras don't even come close:cool:

NONE of us has this idea... :D... btw, your Summaron 35, Elmar 90, Hektor 135 are PERFECTLY usable (with a 20$ ring) on the DIGITAL Leica M9/M8... ;).. just in these days, there has been, here in the forum, a thread on how fine is the Summaron 35 with digital Leicas...

I expect there will be certain situations where either system will win out. For portraits of my girlfriend out on the Mongolian steppe I imagine a film camera would be perfect, and hopefully its qualities will produce results that I'll treasure forever. On the other hand, each summer I work for the organisers of a charity rally to Ulaanbaatar, and as I'm trying to capture a car moving at speed I expect I'd turn to digital. Say what you will about film (and most of it I'm happy to believe), but there are certain things digital just does better (or, at least, more conveniently and at a lower cost).

So, I'll be flying out on Thursday with both the Leica and Canon, but I'll probably turn to the Leica whenever the opportunity presents itself :)
