Sausalito Posted May 30, 2011 Author Share #41 Posted May 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I got a dust spot (or lubricating oil (?) in the top sky area of my X1. I suppose I could send it to New Jersey and have it out of commission for at least a couple of weeks. OR I could simply remove the offending blob in LightRoom with the cloning tool in about 5 seconds. It's not oil... that would spread a lot... dust looks like an oil spot because it's diffused. Unless you know how to take the camera apart (even if I did, I wouldn't while I had a warranty), you should send it to Leica. They do take at least a couple of weeks but they are the experts and worth the wait. Good luck... it's weird to hear of even these few cases of dust on a pretty well sealed camera... I can't help but wonder how it really happens. And the vast majority don't experience it... cheers, tom

And the vast majority don't experience it... cheers, tom I got dust on my X1 recently, right after one year of (good and heavy) use. I was able to "spot" the date of the occurrence but I can't track the cause as I was not using the camera in any adverse environment in what regards to dust. For now I am removing the spots on a need basis, but soon I will send it to Leica service. I attached a picture of the "problem" that depends of the fstop (5.6 in this image). At f2.8 the spot is rather blurred, and at f8 rather defined. Regards, Antonio. Welcome, dear visitor! It's not sealed against ingress of dust (or water etc). I have dust spots now on my Digilux and Clux, it's a case of when not if.
Sausalito Posted May 30, 2011 Author Share #44 Posted May 30, 2011 If it's really that sure we will have dust, once our. Warranties are up, we will have to learn how to take the body apart for dust cleaning. Any one seen a diagram or video showing how to clean our sensors? rlade Posted June 3, 2011 Share #45 Posted June 3, 2011 Mine just left for New Jersey on Wednesday via priority mail. Dust spots after only 400 shots. Love the X1....not crazy about the pesky telescoping lens though!!!!! But then again, I had a dust issue with my Digilux 2 and that's a fixed lens. Go figure!!!! I just got this back from New Jersey today and guess what.....it's on it's way back again. I sent it up there with what appeared to be one dust spot. Well, they got rid of that one and gave me 20 smaller ones. What's it take to get anything done right the first time??? I guess I wait another two or three weeks!!! canetsbe Posted June 13, 2011 Share #46 Posted June 13, 2011 Just got mine back as well, and they got rid of the ones that were there when I sent it in. Too bad there's a new one now...... I mean really? It would have been nice to have some sort of auto dust clean feature like the Canon SLRs have. Used to have a digital rebel xti and never had a problem with dust as it cleaned itself after every use. It seems this X1 dust problem isn't an isolated issue. Sausalito Posted June 13, 2011 Author Share #47 Posted June 13, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I got mine back last night... finally... and I am happy to say that it is really 100% clean. They did a better job than I do on my Nikon D3 with about an hour of work :-) I shot a blue sky at f/16 and then view it at full size... no dust Thanks, Leica tom
canetsbe Posted August 15, 2011 Share #48 Posted August 15, 2011 After sending the camera back again and having them replace the lens/sensor assembly, the camera was returned with another couple dust spots on it. Not to mention a newly non-working flash. I guess that particular camera was somewhat of a lemon. Leica reps in NJ were glad to offer a new replacement X1 but after all this hassle I am having trouble justifying keeping the camera. I already have an M8 which I use more anyway, along with other M cameras and can see the new X1 I'll be getting back from them turning into a new film scanner or some M glass... At least I can speak highly of Leica's customer service. Carmen Vargas was a pleasure to speak with over the phone.
ricardojh Posted August 16, 2011 Share #49 Posted August 16, 2011 Dust appeared on my X1 sensor in it's 4th month. The New Jersey service center replaced the camera. I'm just hoping that it doesn't happen again. Best regards. Richard
robert blu Posted October 17, 2011 Share #50 Posted October 17, 2011 I just joined the "dust on x1 sensor club". Disappointing. Probably badbob is correct: it happened me after a few windy and dry days. My dealer said that camera has to go to Solms and it will take 6 weeks before being back. He's not sure warranty covers this (?) . Time to learn to use my wife's DSLR ! robert PS I have planned a trip with my wife in four weeks, no x1! Not a big problem but this is the main reason stopping me to decide for an m9...
Matus Kalisky Posted October 17, 2011 Share #51 Posted October 17, 2011 Sorry for you troubles guys. Now I see the point why so many hope the X2 (should it ever come) to have non-moving lenses (like X100). Still - I would have expected the camera is sealed better to avoid sucking in the dust. DaveO Posted October 19, 2011 Share #52 Posted October 19, 2011 Sorry to hear about dust spots on sensor of a fixed lens camera. I have been thinking of getting the Fuji x10, hope it doesn't have this problem. I don't think the lens collapses to create this suction when opening? I don't think the lens collapses to create this suction when opening? Oh, but it does; the lens collapses when you turn the camera off. Even the X100 isn’t safe. rlade Posted October 20, 2011 Share #54 Posted October 20, 2011 I went through this a couple months ago. I sent my X1 to Leica USA for two small dust spots on the sensor. I got it back, believe it or not, with 21 small spots on the sensor. Back to New Jersey it went where they replaced the entire lens and sensor assembly. Top notch service....Dave and his group are great to deal with. Leica paid for me to ship the camera back, they expedited the service and sent it back to me overnight at Leica's expense. I don't know if it does any good or not, but from then on I point the camera toward the ground when I turn it on and off.
NZDavid Posted October 20, 2011 Share #55 Posted October 20, 2011 Turnaround time here was about two months. Mine was cleaned but then the sensor failed entirely and had to be sent back again for replacement. I've now traded the X1. A shame because in many ways it's a lovely camera and the IQ is superb. I wonder if sensor dust is an inherent risk with this design. Everywhere in New Zealand is windy! But I haven't had and trouble with the D-Lux 5 which also zooms in and out. robert blu Posted October 21, 2011 Share #56 Posted October 21, 2011 I got it back, believe it or not, with 21 small spots on the sensor. ohh, this is frightening me... robert
stephen.w Posted October 22, 2011 Share #57 Posted October 22, 2011 But I haven't had and trouble with the D-Lux 5 which also zooms in and out.Perhaps less of an issue with the smaller sensor? Not to jinx it, but I have yet to see dust on the sensor of my X1, which has been in regular use since February last year. I wonder if the problem is an inevitability, as some on this forum have said?
gjames9142 Posted October 22, 2011 Share #58 Posted October 22, 2011 On every single photo from now on? Take 2000 pics on a weekend and that's nearly 3 hours extra PP. It will be dust, not oil. Had forgotten about this thread. You only need to remove spots from images you are going to print, or sent as jpeg or put in your Flikr site. How many is that ? Pointless to clean them all up unless they are all masterpieces. I am used to dust all the time on the M9. No big deal, especially if you have ever tried hand=spotting a silver print. robert blu Posted October 31, 2011 Share #59 Posted October 31, 2011 hmmm, at least another 4 weeks to wait for the x1 be back from Solms... I had to shoot some Halloween party tonight and the x1 was the correct camera to do it because of small size ...but not possible robert PS: sorry for this rant, but I'm very disappointed... robert blu Posted November 17, 2011 Share #60 Posted November 17, 2011 My x1 is back from Solms (after 5 weeks including shipment) and seems to be ok ! From a preliminary view no more dust on sensor, by now robert
