X1 sensor dust ???

Better still, don't use it at all -- just keep it on the shelf in a display case in a nicely regulated air-conditioned environment. :rolleyes:

 

I agree , if you have an X1 do not use it ... i keep mine in a clean-room within a vacuum sealed cabinet ... when i want to handle it ... i firstly take a beta-blocker to calm my nerves , put on kid gloves and then hold my breath when its finally in my hands.

Dust problems ..... never :p

Update on my X1, after no reply from Solms yesterday and with no response by mi day Wednesday I phoned UK Leica Customer Care lab in London.

 

Explained what I was seeing on the images and was told it was dust, I think the chapsaid something along the lines it shouldn't happen as the cameras are sealed but occasionally does. They took my details and a UPS parcel label was emailed. When I next checked my email after returning home from work, I discovered Solms had also replied to my email with another UPS label!

 

Anyway its all wrapped up and awaiting collection tomorrow.

 

Hope it doesn't take too long and doesn't happen again!

 

As I say its my first experience with dust in a string of digital Leicas - hope it is the last!

Dang, now that I read this thread, I have dust on my sensor as well! It has appeared in the past week but in that time the air here in southern california has been EXTREMELY dry and quite hot and I've noticed static building up and shirts static clinging, hairs rising, etc. Maybe the camera is a victim of this environment.

I only mentioned it so that people would know. I take it that there are some here who would rather that people not know. How would not knowing help?

Interesting to know, but surely the X1 should be tough enough to withstand everyday use?

 

Mine sure does OK, and one thing I learned long ago was to keep kleenex and other such dusty items far away from the Leica lens.

I checked UPS tracking and my X1 arrived at Solms at 08:58 on Monday.

 

Today I have recieved an email confirming arrival and to quote condition on arrival was:

 

"traces of use

display scratched"

 

Just wondering how they can claim display scratched.

 

I ordered a suitable screen protector via Amazon UK which actually came from the USA at the same time I ordered the camera.

 

The screen protector was applied when I started to use the camera!

 

Rather strange the screen is described as scratched, perhaps they have not noticed a protector has been applied.

Hi, just a tip, before shipping cameras/phones etc etc..I take pictures of the said item, and I always send copies with my shipped item..

ie. within shipping box:- item(dah) my details/item make, model, serial number. Covering letter & images pre shipping...(exif proves date-N-time etc..)...

Interesting tip - will follow it next time.

 

I must admit in the ten years or so I have had leica digital equipment I have never had to send anything back until now.

 

I am just presuming that they have not noticed a screen protector has been applied and the scratch is on the screen protector. (Hope no one has removed the screen protector!)

I've just had my X1 returned from Solms after a sensor clean, all appears well and turnaround was reasonable - they had for ca 24 days. Like may others I'm used to having to deal with sensor dust on my M8 but was amazed, after about 9 months usage, to find that something had managed to find its way into my X1. There was nothing extraordinary in how or where it was being used at the time so I have to put it down to (ill) chance. Repair was done under warranty.

Good news for you... UPS tracking says mine will be back from NJ sometime today... expecting the same... only took about 2 weeks and also warranty covered. Good for Leica!

I just got mine back from sensor cleaning... truth be told, the only way I can imagine it got dust in it was from when I sent it in for repair last December for a dent in the top that came from a drop (flash wouldn't open). Certainly that is the only time the case was "opened"

 

I don't think it is very likely to get dust just from the telescoping feature of the lens, though there are a few who argue that is a weaker design than the pancake flat/non-moving lens on the X100.

 

Time will tell

Mine just left for New Jersey on Wednesday via priority mail. Dust spots after only 400 shots. Love the X1....not crazy about the pesky telescoping lens though!!!!! But then again, I had a dust issue with my Digilux 2 and that's a fixed lens. Go figure!!!!

Just checked the repair tracking on my X1 - it was completed on May 20.

 

Hope it gets back to me by next Saturday.

 

Has anyone had to pay for an out of warranty dust clean?

 

If so - how much did it cost?

I sent my Digilux 2 to New Jersey for a dust issue and it cost me $80. But to be fair, Leica did the whole CLA while they had it.

 

Sounds reasonable when converted to UK sterling. Anyone from UK or EU have any experience?

Pleased to report that my X1 returned today - just in the nick of time as I wanted it for next week.

 

It has been away 3 weeks and 1 day.

 

Everything looks fine - slight trace of screwdriver on the black screws but that is it.

 

However, still puzzled by the receipt condition report "traces of use - display scratched".

 

I had wondered if someone had removed the screen protector which has been in place since I bought it. They hadn't - can't see any scratches!

 

Just hope this dust incident was a one off as its the first I have encountered across a selection of Leica digicams.

I got a dust spot (or lubricating oil (?) in the top sky area of my X1. I suppose I could send it to New Jersey and have it out of commission for at least a couple of weeks. OR I could simply remove the offending blob in LightRoom with the cloning tool in about 5 seconds.

On every single photo from now on? Take 2000 pics on a weekend and that's nearly 3 hours extra PP.

 

It will be dust, not oil.
