Visible Dust Cleaning Swabs - Wrong Size

Hi guys, new member / M8.2 owner (2 months), loving every minute...

I've been using the Rocket blower with great results to clean my sensor, but there are a few small spots that are being stubborn. I ordered a 4-pack of Visible Dust 1.3 swabs with Sensor Clean liquid, but as I was preparing for sensor surgery I realized that my vendor had shipped 1.6 (16mm) swabs by mistake. Of course I have already opened the package, so returning or exchanging is probably out of the question.

I don't like wasting $25, but I'm much more concerned about using 16mm swabs on an 18mm sensor and leaving streak marks. I leave for Europe soon and as much as I would like to have this cleaning done I don't want to make things worse.

I thought I read a post where a member said he used one size smaller swabs, but I could not find it again (search skills are still in development).

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I would recommend that you return them ... just to make things easy. I think the 16s could work, but I try to keep such things as straight forward as possible. ( I should note that I have various products from Invisible Dust and love them all.)

Thanks for all the help and advice, greatly appreciated.

Enrico, I owned "Southern Cross" until 2008 (divorce and warbirds don't go together well). It is a fantastic airplane, and is now flown under the name "Sawbones" by a gentleman from Minnesota. The Sea Fury is a fantastic airplane, faster than a Mustang and MUCH faster than a Spitfire. I very much enjoyed taking it to airshows and racing at Reno, and look forward to acquiring another warbird soon.

In the meantime I'm enjoying rediscovering my love affair with Leica, which goes back to my college days but experienced a rather large timeline gap (no thanks to Canon). I'm home now...

Cheers.

I vastly prefer smaller swabs. I use APS- sized swabs for the M9

Jaap, what technique do you use when cleaning the sensor with the smaller size swabs? Do you first swipe the top 2/3'rds then the bottom 2/3'rds? I'm concerned about leaving streaks, but it's probably more to do with anxiety over wet cleaning the sensor for the first time.

Sea Fury, I use plastic swabs from one of the manufacturers (the same as the Eclipse fluid manufacturer).

I recycle them with fresh pads, that I wrap the same way, like they come sealed out of the box and remove potential dust from the wrapped swabs with a blower bulb.

This way, I can modify any too wide swabs and rewrap them.

I use very little fluid (Eclipse E2) on a fresh, dry swab (1 − 2 drops only) - no streaking marks this way.

I swab the sensor in both directions, using always a fresh part of the swab.

Then I shoot a test image, inspect the image on a computer monitor and repeat until the sensor is sufficiently clean.

I use the same swabs, pads and Eclipse E2 fluid for the M8.2 and Nikon D3 sensor.

Thom Hogan has a nice small article about sensor cleaning on his website "bythom dot com" I developed my technique from that basis.

Thank you for the story, I''m a big fan of WWII warplanes and remember seeing pictures of your Sea Fury on the net. So welcome back to the Leica world and get back to the swabs issue.
