So if no one else jumps in here's something to continue this very nice thread... I have no idea if it is difficult or not, probably it is. So the very general area is quite sufficient to solve the riddle, or the name of the river...

... this is exactly what it is! Maybe not the backwaters but this is the Mississippi River, seen from the overlook at Pike's Peak State Park near McGregor, IA. The river forms the border to Wisconsin. On the opposite side the Wisconsin River would normally be seen merging with the Mississippi - but in this photo this part is lost in the fog and the snowstorm... The photo was taken just a little more than a week ago. In better weather the view is magnificent (easy to find on google). But I liked the scenery nonetheless, and the little wind-driven waves...

My sincerest congratulations, war - your memory is impressive!

And over to you!

Thanks. I Googled it. It is exactly the same place, what are the odds. And it hasn't changed!

I last fished at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin seventy years ago, a springtime ritual with my Dad.  It's directly across the river from McGregor Iowa.

... this is simply wonderful! 70 years ago! What memories you must have...

I visited the Wisconsin side as well, Prairie du Chien... the whole area is of a special kind of beauty. The "driftless area" they call it, because it was never under ice during the last ice ages... very special.

I found one taken from above. This should go fast to make up for the delay.
