larsv Posted November 15, 2021 Share #6022 Posted November 15, 2021 I think Wally is correct. Juneau or Mendenhall glacier.
stuny Posted November 16, 2021 Share #6023 Posted November 16, 2021 Close enough. My notes and photos don't give me enough info to be certain. Your turn, Wally
war Posted November 16, 2021 Share #6024 Posted November 16, 2021 Hopefully we have a geology buff that will make quick work of this. We're peering down about 900 feet from this rim. There are two of these separated by a main road. The location or the name of this place please. Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted November 17, 2021 Share #6025 Posted November 17, 2021 I assume this is a caldera of an extinct volcano.
war Posted November 17, 2021 Share #6026 Posted November 17, 2021 Actually the entire landscape shown in the photo lies in the caldera of a dormant volcano. The subject in the center, a 1300 foot circular 900 foot deep pit, the world’s largest of its type, is not a caldera although it resulted from volcanic activity. This distinction is important only as a hint to its location.

stuny Posted November 19, 2021 Share #6029 Posted November 19, 2021 Perhaps Vulcan Sierra Negra on Isla Isabela?
war Posted November 19, 2021 Share #6030 Posted November 19, 2021 You're in the right archipelago, but the wrong island. Sierra Negra is a volcano on Isabela Island that is active and in fact last erupted about a year or two ago. Hints: The feature in the photo was formed in the caldera on top of an island that IS the entire volcano. It's dormant and the last activity is thought to be at least ten thousand years ago. TMI? And Stuart, I think you've been there.
stuny Posted November 20, 2021 Share #6031 Posted November 20, 2021 Just guessing at this point - Darwin Island?
war Posted November 20, 2021 Share #6032 Posted November 20, 2021 Not Darwin Island. Sadly, the iconic Darwin Arch collapsed into the Pacific earlier this year.
war Posted December 8, 2021 Share #6033 Posted December 8, 2021 This has taken way too long, not my intent. Final clue: On Santa Cruz Island (Galapagos)
Michael Geschlecht Posted December 10, 2021 Share #6034 Posted December 10, 2021 (edited) Hello Wally, That is a nice photo & a good choice of places for people to try to find. It is too bad that nobody, except you, was able to identify it. Since you were the person who identified the place: Do you think that you might have another selection for us to try to locate? This is one of the Los Gemelos, the twins, gigantic collapsed magma chambers, on the island of Santa Cruz, the Galapagos Archipelago. Please post a new photo so we can start up again.
