Natural and architectural details should help... Â OK ! since it is the last day of the year and there is no answer, I give the solution : Constantine, Algeria. philipus Posted January 18, 2015 Share #3689 Â Posted January 18, 2015 Wild Google-based guess: Timgad, Algeria?
Pecole Posted January 19, 2015 Share #3690 Â Posted January 19, 2015 Wild Google-based guess: Timgad, Algeria? Â You were nearing, "Philipus" : it is Algeria indeed, but not Timgad... It is in fact near (50 km) Setif, at 900m altitude in the mountains off the Northern coast of Algeria and is called Djemila, or Gamila, what means "the beautiful" in Arabic. This ancient Roman city of Cuicul (sometimes called Curculum), created around 90 A.D. and abandoned from the end of the Roman empire, as from the 5th-6th century, was listed as World Heritage in 1982 and is considered one of the world's most beautiful site of Roman ruins. Now the story behind the image : I took it with an M3/Summicron 50 in 1960, and it was the only one I was able to snap. Indeed, at the very moment I depressed the release, we got two shots in the left wing of our plane and had to break off as fast as we could : rebels were occupying the site ! (the Algerian war was in course).
philipus Posted January 19, 2015 Share #3691  Posted January 19, 2015 That is quite a story indeed. I am happy nothing worse happened. I take it I should post a photo then, so I hope this qualifies, taken as it is from a mountain top. Which town is this?  Welcome, dear visitor! philipus Posted January 21, 2015 Share #3695 Â Posted January 21, 2015 Hi Michael Yes indeed, that is precisely the region. Now which town could it be? br philip
philipus Posted January 22, 2015 Share #3696 Â Posted January 22, 2015 A hint - the town's population grows exponentially every tenth summer.
stefans4 Posted January 22, 2015 Share #3697 Â Posted January 22, 2015 Exponentially... hmm, let's see. That's quite something. Does it decrease again after those summers? So the increase is only temporary? Is it perhaps due to some kind of rare attraction, such as a Passion Play?

So the increase is only temporary? Is it perhaps due to some kind of rare attraction, such as a Passion Play? Â Â Ok to move things on, and seeing that substantively the right answer has been given, the town is Oberammergau in Bavaria, which has hosted a world-famous Passion Play every 10th year since 1634.
