It is NY, and it is above times Square from Barbara's office. The lighted ball is the one that drops to ring in the New year, and that evening they were testing the mechanism to be used two or three weeks later. Steve and Stefan are both correct, and since Stefan has no access to his files, Steve is by defaul the next "puzzler."

Okay, I'll assume you meant me.:) So here's the next one.

Which town are we overlooking? (That's a lake not the sea.)

Pete.

So the town is called … ?

Pete.

Is it Spiez at the Lake Thun?

Thun (French: Thoune) for its own is a city and municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Although sometimes as a child I spent with my parents our summer vacation beside the Lake Thun, I have never even met to my regret a single tuna fish while snorkeling.:)

Thanks Pete.

Now, what is shown on the following photo that was taken in the evening?

St Pauli?

Pete.

Oh, too many red curtains are shown in the photo? ;)

No, the area is likely still more influenced by the Roman Catholic Church and people there even have their own Bishop's residence.

Hey, everyone went to Easter trip? ;)

St. Pauli as the first association was not bad at all figured out, after all, continent and country are the same, but the photo is from a different city.

So, let's see what we know at this point:

(A) City is in Germany and is seat of a Catholic bishop.

(B) By the look of the city: not small, not large, perhaps 100,000-200,000 inhabitants.

© By the look of the river: not small, not large, perhaps navigable but barely.

I'll list (A) seats of Catholic bishops in Germany, then check (B) and © for each of them:

Bamberg: city and river both too small

Eichstätt: town and river both much too small

Speyer: town too small, river much too large

Würzburg: well, there's a candidate!

Berlin: obviously not

Dresden/Meissen: river too large

Görlitz: city too small, river too large

Cologne: both city and river much too large

Aachen: what river?

Essen: city much too large

Limburg: town too small

Münster: what river?

Trier: candidate but not a good one

Freiburg: what river?

Mainz: river much too large

Rottenburg/Stuttgart: doesn't fit at all

Hamburg: obviously not

Hildesheim: what river?

Osnabrück: what river?

Munich/Freising: city (Munich) much too large

Augsburg: city not as open to the river

Passau: town too small, river(s) much too large

Regensburg: candidate but not a good one

Paderborn: what river?

Erfurt: what river?

Fulda: town too small

Magdeburg: river too large

So, this seems to narrow it down to 3 candidates...

Very diligently researched!

Your helpful list of all the bishoprics in Germany I'll save to my computer.

But please make your decision among your preselection.

Hello Mnutzer,

Could we be on the Moselle or 1 of its tributaries?

Best Regards,

Michael

No, the Moselle River is located further west of the searched city.

Still Happy Easter to all puzzles participants.
