Perhaps not the right section of this site, anyhow my question is, wasn't there a site where one could report a stolen Leica camera or lens with its serial number. If so I would like to know the name of that website (couldn't find anything at the official Leica site).

 

btw I just got confirmation today that a package with a Leica M6 TTL , vf 0.85, sn 2549919 - black anodized, which I had sent to London, has been stolen from the depot from a company called Home Delivery Network.

I'm sorry for your loss, Ron,,, of course this, basically is a story to be managed by Police & C... I don't think that somewhere there is a managed list of stolen Leicas... I have an old copy of the well known McKeown guide of collectible cameras, and it reported a list of stolen Leicas identified by s/n, but I doubt it's kept updated by someone. I think that the well known specialist dealers take attention on the origin of the items they put for sale, but maybe some mails to them can be are taken into account by them... Apart this, I think there is the way to setup some computer program that, for instance, checks every day or so if a certain item is offered for sale on ebay... I'm not an expert on the ebay ecosystem, but have the idea it is possible.

Thanks Luigi, indeed I will (together with the addressee) report this stolen object to the Metropolitan police. I don't think enlisting the serialnumber on a public site may bring the camera back, however it might be a little help for other people who are offered camera's (sometimes for very unrealistic low prices) to check if something is missing or stolen.

I saw some old lists also, they are quite long, and seem not updated indeed!

I don't know if Leica checks whether items sent to them for CLA etc. are on a list of stolen goods. Perhaps it might be helpful to inform them.

After that page was gone, I simply registered my stolen Leica gear at Leica's the-new owners website as one of my measures, couldn't hurt...

I believe that if you email Customer Service at Leica, they will keep an eye out for your camera if it ever gets returned for service.

 

Proper insurance is the only answer, I'm afraid.

Ron, why not open a thread in Customer Forum intitled MISSING LEICA and post your first thread in it and explaining the goal of this thread ?

If it were me, I would e mail full details to Leica, and then to as many Leica dealers as I could. An opportunist thief will want to sell it on quickly, it's not the type of camera that will sell 'down the pub' - they are most likely to try e bay or just take it into a dealer for cash.

That is "goed balen", as we say in Holland. Perrhaps a good idea to open a "sticky" thread here and on RFF, with numbers of stolen cameras and lenses.

I am sorry to hear of your loss. As Andy pointed out I would definitely inform Leica via mail or by phone, apart from the police of course.

Thank you all for your advice and of course for sympathizing:).

 

To answer part of your questions. Although I have no proof yet (or maybe never may have) it seems that the company in the UK that had to take care of the package might have some problems with internal mail fraud. Why are we assuming that: in short: the package was first reported by them having a wrong (read: not existing) address, which - as later turned out - was not at all true. However because they didn't return the package, after a while we started asking questions. It took very long before we got any answers. In the end they reported they had lost track of the package. When we started asking more questions, they reported the package was lost/stolen at their London depot. They didn't report this themselves to the police. We (me and the addressee) are still trying to get a compensation from this mail company and/or from their insurance company. Since more than one mail company was involved, getting a claim paid is not easy. (I had this also posted at RFF)
