hi Ludders

Personally I have found that the AF is useless for street photography, and so will MF be on an M.

If you want AF for street photography go for a SLR, as cj suggested.

For street photography, in my opinion, the easiest is to use MF, and select F stops for depth of field control, now easier with firmware upgrade. You will have to do the same with an M. Except M will have less depth of field for the same F stop.

I have been happily shooting street shots MF at f8 and f11, set to be in focus from about 1.8m to infinity and then X1 is as fast as you can get- same will be for M cameras. I often put the X1 on drive and then I can pick up the camera and bang off up to 6 images rapidly, and if you cant get something then, well....

The thing is that for street photography using the X1, and I suspect any M, you have to change your shooting style to anticipation as opposed to reaction, and keep your finger on the trigger( prime the shutter) long before you take the shot

What I really love is face detection when I am closer doing faces and portraits using the optical viewfinder. And for precise framing I can use the LCD.

Beware though that, for me at least, it takes a lot of practice to master the X1 for street photography, and I suppose so will any M.

What I do miss is an occasional longer lens like a 50 or 75/80 which of course you can get with a M. I will have to do with a SLR for that as any M is beyond my means.... But I actually like the diminished choices, one lens, MF, optical viewfinder, no noise, no aggression, and yet I have lots of choice to shoot almost any kind of image, close ups, precise framing, fast street work etc etc

Enclosed a pic I took recently where I literally saw this guy walking into my view, picked up the X1 to my eye, and..... one shot later....I could not have wished for a faster camera, BUT, it took me a while to get here and lots and lots of practise.....

Good luck with whatever choice you make....

That's true for the X1, but not for an M. The X1 lens 'idles' at it's widest aperture and only stops down to the selected aperture on the half press of the shutter, which means (as you say) that you have to anticipate the action somewhat.

Nice to see another South African user :)

Sorry to hear some are giving up on the X1 - I bought mine in January but have only really started to use mine a lot since the start of spring - and use it a lot I have.

Its taken a bit to get use to and I am still learning things about it - but it is a brilliant camera and has very much relegated my Digilux 3 and C-Lux 2 to the back shelf.

As it doesn't have zoom function it can't be my permanent camera - some of my subjects requires my V-Lux 1 - but for everything else the X1 is my camera of choice.

Okay I have lost about half a dozen pictures due to slowish auto focus - but learning to work around that by using manual.

What did people do before AF?

Haha wow, rough! I thought you were one if the nice guys DL! Ah well, the Internet never ceases to amaze me.

Ludders, I saved up and got an M8 to compliment my X1 ( or vice versa) and I love it. I still thoroughly enjoy the X1and it is far superior in low light but there is nothing like getting behind an M as I've learned. Either way you can't go wrong, but you made your choice and I hope you get great use out of it.

Just a word to the wise.

Moderators have been getting more complaints about the attitude of some members in the X1 sub-forum than all the others put together.

I fear that we may need to be more strict with regards to the completely un-necessary rudeness that seem to be prevalent among a minority of X1 owners.

Sorry, but direct rudeness really is un-called for and will be deleted without further reference.

Please read and understand the Forum Rules.

Thanks

This is what i do not understand is how can an X1 out perform an M8 in low light ... it does not exactly use a fast lens ... its just not clear cut for me ... an M8 should be better than an X1 in all aspects but i read time and again that it is not ... some actually prefer their X1 to M8 ... from my own point of view ... having an X1 i still hanker after an M8 ... as then i know its a real Leica and it will weigh and feel like one ... will cost a lot more with a good lens but then may not take superior images .

Things are a lot simplier in the Astronomy world as you pay for the finest optics you can afford and this will offer the best views.

So i too would like to own both an M8 and X1.

I have sold both my M8.2 and my M9 and bought a "new" demoware X1 from Meister in Berlin. Next week I will be in Vienna, and will have a look at the Jochen Rind edition that seems to be nice looking.............

So far I'm very satisfied with the X1 performance, just OOC pictures in JPEG, no additional work on my PC needed anymore.

This is what I want a camera to be!

Brian,

I have been down that route.

My take is, if the X1's 35mm is insufficient and you do not want to have a complimentary DSLR or other interchangeable lens system than the M8 has to be the way to go.

As for image quality in a nutshell the M8 has better low iso performance, the X1 trumps it at iso 640 and above. The M8 files are much more crisp but color rendition on the X1 is better, plus better auto WB.

If the portability of the X1 is not an issue or a big advantage (it is to me) I would say go for the M8. it is a system afterall and accords a lot more flexibility.

I'm not a techman but the X1 basically is much newer technology then the M8 and it's ISO range is usable all the way up to 3200. Speaking for me (and me only) I'm just going to say it, the X1 produces sharper images across the board and the RAW files are very clean. That said I'm using nokton lenses on my M8 so I know my glass may not be on par with what could be produced using Leica lenses. On the other hand the files coming from the M8 are very filmic and shooting at 1.4 is so much fun. That combined with the fact you get to use a little piece of history everyday makes the M8 even more sublime.

Both cameras fill different needs, and do it well and in the end either one could take that one picture you've been waiting to take for a long time.

Well thank you very much indeed Gentlemen for your candid response ... its clear that the X1 is a serious performer and perhaps even offers good value in the Leica digital world ... i can now rest assured :)

Hi, SolarB, I have spent many happy times in Scotland, in fact I worked professionally in Scotland for a few years ( I had a beautiful Scots g/friend).. The scenery is tremendous & at times even a Land Camera could not capture the whole beauty.

I think the main feelings about the X1 is that it does not have a built in VF..Somehow the missing VF can spoil an otherwise great piece of photographic technology.. After much practice using the EVF I’m 95% happy..but as always we always want more..

Whichever camera you use, remember it’s a tool and an extension of your perceived senses.

ie. How YOU see the scene/shot.. The box brownie took amazing images for it’s time & I’m sure many families still look thro’ the old pics with amazement. Photography is sometimes more personal than we care to admit..I see, you see, they see..

Go out and enjoy taking the images You want to... Good Luck..

I feel like this thread is again turning into the dreaded (and endless) M8 vs X1 debate, so with my best attempt at not doing that here is how I feel:

I was probably one of the strongest advocates for the X1, in the beginning. Firmware 1.0 and everything. However, after the initial honeymoon period, I began to flip flop between the X1 and the M8. Both had it's advantages and disadvantages, but against the 24mm Summilux on my M8, the X1 fought bravely and lost quickly.

That said, last summer I took a trip to Europe with the family and shot the X1 and M8 side by side. Funnily enough, my top 10 favorite photos from that trip were all from the X1. Which made me conclude that in that the preference for these cameras are situation dependent.

As serious as the X1 is, it is still a "casual" camera and more suitable for "casual" picture. Maybe this is a personal preference, but I just don't feel as serious when I'm shooting the X1 when compared to my M8. I can rationalize this with the lack of speedy/precise manual focus, the slow AF speed of the X1 or the fact that its labeled as a "point and shoot" but at the end of the day the camera and I did not "click". I remember reading an article disputing the "It's not the camera it's the photographer" saying that so many people like to use when confronted with complaint about a camera, but the jist of the article suggest that the camera does matter. Not in the way that there are "better" or "worse" cameras objectively, but that there are cameras that are more suited for a particular photographer than others.

I guess the X1 just did not suit my shooting style. But we did make some beautiful images together though. Some are still amongst my favorite photos.

As you can see, my favorite X1 photos lacked the "motion" that I wanted in my photography. (NOTE: If anyone can guess where I went on vacation, they will receive a free Leica M9 Ti from Leica - be sure to contact them to claim the prize and not me)

And in case anyone was wondering, I sold my X1 a while prior to the release of firmware 2.0, so I can't speak to the "improved" X1. Although the improvements in the firmware does not affect my main complaints with the X1.

Ivan, I love your shot! The B&W treatment suits it perfectly. Well done.

When you point a camera at an archway or a statue, I'm not sure you can blame it, the camera, for the lack of motion in the photo ;)

I've had my x1 for about 6 months now and have just last week purchased an m8. I couldn't get that nagging voice out of my head "need M, need M." so I sold Canon 7d and lenses and bought a mint condition M8 + 50mm summarit lens. Couldn't be happier!

I mainly shoot street (with x1 in manual focus) and am hoping the two will compliment each other.

I love the x1 but have to admit the M8 is my new favorite and if I had to choose one it would be the M8.
