otto.f Posted April 18, 2011 Share #21 Posted April 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Depite all this I'll still answer: FAQ post # xx. That is why we started the FAQ. A service for new members, to be able to look up the most obvious questions. I would recommend the search button, if you can find a strategic word for what you're searching. I tried the FAQ on 'dust + sensor', but it did not respond, this a theme that has been discussed over and over
Advertisement Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Hi otto.f, Take a look here A new (?) ruse in this Forum?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bill Posted April 18, 2011 Share #22 Posted April 18, 2011 It's the nature of life for things to repeat. I'm not bothered per se by someone new wanting to know something that has been discussed before. What irks me is the attitude that some people display in the way they demand to be spoonfed. It's the difference between sitting in a restaurant and barking: "Gimme a..." "Get me some..." "I want..." ... and saying: "I would like a ... "Would you recommend..." "Please may I have..." Boorish behaviour begets short shrift, in whatever context. Regards, Bill

plasticman Posted April 19, 2011 Share #25 Posted April 19, 2011 What irks me is the attitude that some people display in the way they demand to be spoonfed. Sometimes that's true - then if it irks the reader, there's always the option of simply not responding to the query. But sometimes it's simply a language problem: a person that's translated their question into English with the help of google.translate may not realize that their request lacked the niceties of the elevated social codes required on the Leica forum. bill Posted April 19, 2011 Share #26 Posted April 19, 2011 Mani, one invariably cuts plenty of slack to those who are not engaging in their native tongue. In my experience, it is usually those who claim English as their first language who are the most boorish in their approach. Regards, Bill
NZDavid Posted April 20, 2011 Share #27 Posted April 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bill has some excellent standard responses to FAQs. Best is "What lens/camera should I take to (fill in destination)?" Perhaps we need some more with multiple choice answers? Just tick the box... plasticman Posted April 20, 2011 Share #28 Posted April 20, 2011 I think some people consider bating new users as some kind of fun sport. Humiliate them enough, and that'll keep the place cosy and familiar for the established gang.

Peter H Posted April 20, 2011 Share #30 Posted April 20, 2011 Perhaps the solution when making a post on a topic that may already have been covered is to follow the OP's example and simply omit the first few words, ie "forgive me if this has already been covered..." Gerard Posted April 20, 2011 Share #31 Posted April 20, 2011 This is a forum; a community of and for 'likeminded' people. Many will be quiet 'readers' for whom search and FAQ will be perfect. Others will like to talk and be visible in the community, and for this group, FAQ will not satisfy their need. It sounds a tad harsh to me, that mods should block any threads where newbies (or any other user for that matter) are covering a subject that may have already been discussed at some point. plasticman Posted April 20, 2011 Share #33 Posted April 20, 2011 Who mentioned mods blocking anything Regards, Bill From the first post: Forum members (some) are to polite not to reply, commendable in itself, but guys, we are all stepping into that "again and again carousel" ! Mods? You see there where it says "Mods?"
bill Posted April 20, 2011 Share #34 Posted April 20, 2011 I read that as inviting comment/input from mods.... Regards, Bill
plasticman Posted April 20, 2011 Share #35 Posted April 20, 2011 I read that as inviting comment/input from mods.... Regards, Bill Well in that case all except a couple of the answers on this thread were of no relevance to the discussion - including your comments, and mine. I won't attempt to read the OP's mind now, and even allowing for some revisionism in later posts, I'd say the implication was that the mods should be somehow taking action to deal with the supposed 'problem'. bill Posted April 20, 2011 Share #36 Posted April 20, 2011 Nonsense. I cannot speak for anyone else, least of all the OP, but my comments are as valid as when I wrote them, particularly given that I hadn't adopted the same draconian interpretation that you did. andybarton Posted April 20, 2011 Share #37 Posted April 20, 2011 I read that the same way as Bill. I'm not sure what comment a Mod is supposed to make, but I for one am not going to go round deleting threads or posts because they have asked questions that have been asked before. I will delete a post that is rude in response to an enquiry though, if it breaks forum rules.
bocaburger Posted April 20, 2011 Share #38 Posted April 20, 2011 If people are intimidated from repeating a question, then we don't get the benefit of evolving user experience from standing members, or fresh perspectives from newer members.
dcoombs Posted April 20, 2011 Share #39 Posted April 20, 2011 If people are intimidated from repeating a question, then we don't get the benefit of evolving user experience from standing members, or fresh perspectives from newer members. That's fair, though in practice I don't have the sense that it occurs very often. There are several contributors who can be rather curt in their responses or observations, but they don't seem to reserve that approach for newbies alone. Over time you recognize who they are and learn to take it with a grain of salt, as they also have good things to contribute. Doug
archi4 Posted April 20, 2011 Share #40 Posted April 20, 2011 I happened to start reading this thread and was totally amazed at the energy that was put into it. If you happen to have an answer to a question, just politely answering it seems to me so much simpler and friendlier than trying to put someone in his place. maurice
