earleygallery Posted April 4, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 4, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) OK it's Lomo Lab, but hey, it's good to see a lab opening for once! Quite a range of services too, including E6, although I can't find a website with prices etc., I'll have to pop in and find out more when I can. I read about this on a cycling forum website, which has a long runing thread about film photography. Advertisement Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Hi earleygallery, Take a look here New lab opened in London. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
plasticman Posted April 4, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 4, 2011 Cool! I'm getting very tired of all the posts bemoaning lab closures and high dev prices, and so on. I found that asking for advice here on the forum led me to a really great and cheap local lab in Stockholm - with a bit more effort on my part I've cut my development costs from around $33 per roll to around $6 or $7 - with far higher quality output and friendlier service included! Sometimes all it takes is a little positive thinking and personal effort.
Stealth3kpl Posted April 4, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 4, 2011 I went to see a movie last night (I Am Number Four). The beautiful girl in the film was clicking away with a Nikon F2 and wet printing in the school darkroom. She was amazing. Despite the aliens hot on their trail, surrounding and breaking into the school, she managed to develop a roll of film and wet print all the frames. She was also a dab hand at scanning for her website. Swoon..... I wish I was 18 again . Incidently, her favourite camera is the Canon Canonet. She decided not to purchase the Hasselblad 500 she was eyeing in the shop. Oh, I need to take a cold shower. I'm not sure what else happened in the movie. adan Posted April 4, 2011 Share #6 Posted April 4, 2011 I went to see a movie last night (I Am Number Four). The beautiful girl in the film was clicking away with a Nikon F2 and wet printing in the school darkroom. Of course! I Am Number Four is science FICTION. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Number_Four_(film) (Sorry - couldn't resist) Seems like the LomoLab is taking an "Apple Store" approach (right down to having a LomoLabRatGenius akin to Apple's "Genius Bar"). A good way to increase film's "cool" factor with youth.
earleygallery Posted April 4, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted April 4, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Lomo sell film cameras. It's a no-brainer, provide easy access to processing facilities for their customers and they'll keep buying cameras and film! Lomo have taken a fair bit of stick from some of the 'serious' photographers on this and other forums, but they are proactively developing (no pun intended) their niche market which can only be a good thing for all film photographers. Leica could take a leaf out of their book.........
andybarton Posted April 4, 2011 Share #8 Posted April 4, 2011 Agreed - sort of. But Leica don't sell (many) film cameras any more and want people to buy their digital ones instead.
earleygallery Posted April 4, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted April 4, 2011 Well, the Lomo Lab idea set me thinking a little. Leica may not sell that many film cameras but they are one of the few remaining manufacturers who sell new 35mm cameras, and lenses don't forget! Leica have a good dealer network, more than Lomo! I'm not suggesting that Leica should install a minilab in Mayfair and their other stores, but there's a seed of an idea...
Stealth3kpl Posted April 4, 2011 Share #10 Posted April 4, 2011 Lomo have taken a fair bit of stick from some of the 'serious' photographers on this and other forums, . And the fact is I'd rather look through Lomo flickr galleries than a lot of "serious" photographers' galleries. Pete
Xmas Posted April 4, 2011 Share #11 Posted April 4, 2011 Agreed - sort of. But Leica don't sell (many) film cameras any more and want people to buy their digital ones instead. They may be selling nearly as many MP and M7 as they did M6 at peak, and MP are premium priced? Otherwise their bean counters would have stopped... Lomo in Spital fields maket (Commercial Street) are open Sunday and they sell film as well, HP5 even... But all their show is expensive, though not costed their processing. The kids outside with the Lomo cameras are startled when they find out how cheap M2 and CV LTM lenses are... but that is as true for M9 owners Noel

Otherwise their bean counters would have stopped... No, I don't think they do. MPs and M7s are made to order. I'm having to wait two or three months for mine. They make them in batches when they have sufficient orders to make it worthwhile setting up a short line.
giordano Posted April 5, 2011 Share #14 Posted April 5, 2011 Surely a Lomo lab will specialise in Lomographic images, complete with light leaks, wonky lenses and miminal quality control. Is that the place for quality-obsessed Leicanuts?
earleygallery Posted April 5, 2011 Author Share #15 Posted April 5, 2011 Surely a Lomo lab will specialise in Lomographic images, complete with light leaks, wonky lenses and miminal quality control. Is that the place for quality-obsessed Leicanuts? Film is film, I don't think they add the light leaks and wonky lens effects during the processing, and I don't think they're actually going to try to ruin films they process! Lomographers do all of their 'effects' stuff at the time they press the shutter button.
andybarton Posted April 5, 2011 Share #16 Posted April 5, 2011 Agreed. Lomo quality is provided by the lens, not the processing.
biglouis Posted April 5, 2011 Share #17 Posted April 5, 2011 The place I have my 120 rolls processed (West End Cameras) has a full range of Lomo cameras and the number of iPhone trendies I see in there purchasing the cameras is a joy to behold. And the range of Lomo cameras is increasing all the time, including a very cute looking TLR and a panoramic camera. They are successfully ploughing an niche and it remains to be seen how long for. Good luck to them. LouisB PS That location is quite convenient for me, as well.
plasticman Posted April 5, 2011 Share #18 Posted April 5, 2011 They are successfully ploughing an niche and it remains to be seen how long for. They've been doing it for quite a while, and it just keeps growing and growing. Still, people on the film forum tend to prefer wallowing in self-pity, so the phenomenon has generally passed them by unnoticed.
Stealth3kpl Posted April 5, 2011 Share #19 Posted April 5, 2011 I live in a small town. I saw a Yashica Electro 35 in the Oxfam shop. I went down to buy it today. Some B#gger bought it last week! I'm not the only one buying film cameras in this town Pete
Xmas Posted April 5, 2011 Share #20 Posted April 5, 2011 including a very cute looking TLR Hi Louis At 281 GBP to you, even an enhanced Lubitel is a tad expensive, my origonal one was 10 GBP and I thought I was ripped off. Note my lens is pretty good... But they are selling them like M9s. I can see some similarities. I normally let the kids try focus, frame, shoot and wind on a M2 or Canon P if they speak to me. Sometimes I have to tell them where Red Dots camera shop is,,, Noel
