lct Posted April 1, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Coding necessary for the M8? Hopefully this has not been discussed here already but i'm currently testing an M8.2 with some of my lenses and i realize that in spite (or because?) of my using IR-cut filters, i don't need 6-bit coding for them at all. True for 28 to 50mm Leica lenses so far but also, to my surprise, for the CV Skopar 21/4. Lens detection off, i get negligible vignetting with it and not the least cyan drift with a Leica IR-cut filter on it. Am i missing something here and should i expect worst results with this lens and/or the Elmarit 21/2.8 asph?

ho_co Posted April 1, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 1, 2011 lct, I say stay away from the M8. It'll cramp your style.
lct Posted April 1, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted April 1, 2011 Yes you're right i'm afraid. Just got a huge cyan drift. Mods feel free to calcel this thread please. Wishful thinking.
lct Posted April 6, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted April 6, 2011 Just tried to hand code the Skopar 21/4 like my Elmarit 21/2.8 asph. I wasn't expecting anything as there is a screw on the way of a white spot but the lens is recognized as a "28mm". The results with Leica IR-cut filter look quite good so far. No significant vignetting or cyan drift for now... Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! trisberg Posted April 6, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 6, 2011 I have a ZM Biogon 21/4.5 and found a 28mm code to be better (less red edge) than any of the 21mm codes. I now use the code for an "Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 (III)" - 000011. My guess is that your code combined with the screw head is interpreted as an "Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 (IV)" - 011011. If it works, then just keep shooting . -Thomas
lct Posted April 6, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted April 6, 2011 Just a sample FWIW (CV 21/4, f/8, 9MB file). Vignetting is harder to adjust with my Epsons and i don't need an add-on viewfinder with the M8-2. Tempting (again). http://tinyurl.com/3bwhpse

You'd lose your curmudgeonly status on the forum. DON'T DO IT!
lct Posted April 6, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted April 6, 2011 Can't hear you Howard, could you speak a bit louder? 2,250 EUR for a mint M8-2 with 1400 actuations and one year warranty, hard to resist even for a spare camera though...
ho_co Posted April 7, 2011 Share #10 Posted April 7, 2011 lct, buy it! That's half what some of us paid for an M8. And then some of us paid again to get the M8 upgraded to semi-M8.2 status. You can't lose. And once you code your lenses and buy your filters, you'll see what the fuss is about. But no one on the forum will ever read your posts again. You'll lose all status. You'll be banned for switching sides, for caving in, for failing to discharge your duties honorably. A failure of manhood. No longer allowed to speak the French tongue. Heavens, they might even force you to choose between being cast into hell and wearing a "Nikon D700" strap. Or maybe they'll make you drag that RD1 through the streets of Paris, dangling from a "Nikon D700" strap attached to the rear of a 2 CV. For shame! For shame! lct Posted April 7, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted April 7, 2011 Yes time for me to become a digiM fan i guess. The little beast still feels as slippery as a soap bar and noisy as a Nikon but the discrete mode and Tim Isaac's Thumb Up (kudos Tim) help me forget those oddities pending the M10 or M11. stunsworth Posted April 7, 2011 Share #12 Posted April 7, 2011 Yes time for me to become a digiM fan i guess Congratulations, I don't think you'll regret it. Personally I use the hand grip with a wrist strap and have never felt the urge to try a thumbs up - different stokes etc.
lct Posted April 7, 2011 Author Share #13 Posted April 7, 2011 Hi Steve the Thumb Up reminds me of the R-D1's and M3 double stroke's shutter lever. Gives me the reassuring feeling that i can rely on my thumb to hold the camera. Except that the 'shutter lever' doesn't work when i want to close it though. Bit perturbing for an old newbie like me. don_panko Posted April 7, 2011 Share #14 Posted April 7, 2011 Instead of adding support for the thumb try a small postage stamp sized piece of grip tape (skateboard tape) placed where your thumb normally rests. I found it was all that I needed to improve the grip on my M8. I run with older glass and lens detection OFF most of the time, so lack of lens coding really isn't a big problem in my experience. Welcome to the dark side.
ho_co Posted April 7, 2011 Share #15 Posted April 7, 2011 I'm with Steve on the handgrip. It really makes a difference IMO, and I quickly got used to not having the wind-on lever. I use the camera with shoulderstrap, but it's the Domke strap with quick-release hooks; the camera is generally in my hand, not on my shoulder, when I'm using it. lct Posted April 7, 2011 Author Share #18 Posted April 7, 2011 Neck strap for me. My favorite is the M4-2's but it is stuck on my R-D1 so i'm using the leather strap of my M3 for now. Any experience witht the Leica's # 14453? Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! don_panko Posted April 7, 2011 Share #19 Posted April 7, 2011 Selecting the 1 inch square of grip tape that you will need to cut for use on the M8 might ruin the skateboard decal. Look for rolls and maybe they'll even give you a sample, but keeping your thumb on a nipple is not a bad thought. If straps are being discussed I have had good luck with a simple loop of light webbing that has a ring on it that can slide easily. The camera hangs by one strap anchor only and it sits nicely concealed and protected at my side. When I need to take a picture the camera easily slides up to eye level. If course if you are into whips and straps something in black leather with studs would be even better.
lct Posted April 7, 2011 Author Share #20 Posted April 7, 2011 Finally ordered the LuxeCase strap # LLST-8801 which looks very close to that of the M3.
