M8 Correction Lenses

I need +1 dpt correction at infinity and +1.5 dpt at 2 meters. Some people refer to the value at 2 meters, this doesn't work for me. So I chose 1 + 0.5 dpt [...] = +1.5 dpt.

You really can contradict yourself this way without blushing? How can you say the value for 2 m didn't work for you?

Sorry? If it were 2 meters i would need 1.5+0.5 = 2 diopters. Am i missing something?

You said for 2 m you need 1.5 dpt. You also said you chose 1.5 dpt.

So how can you say the diopter value for 2 m didn't work for you? Obviously it does!

Could some kind person tell me how I go about finding out which strength correction lens I need for the viewfinder of my M8u, please?

The same correction that you need for your eyeglasses. Always round up to the next stronger correction lens if your numbers don't match exactly the lenses Leica offers.

And don't get confused by all the conspiracy theories concerning diopter correction in this forum.

You want to use your distance correction as the start of your calculation, not whatever your spectacles are corrected for reading.

The camera presents the virtual image as though it was 2 metres in front of the camera. That is what the in-built minus 0.5 diopter correction means.

But you don't necessarily want to correct the finder back to that figure as there is more involved than that.

Visit your optometrist/opthamologist and try some of their temporary test lenses with your camera.

After the latest discussion thread on this, we tried to make an understandable summary of the factors involved here:

Not sure if i understand all this ...

I don't either. It's rather confusing and not very helpful. Not what I'd expect to find in a FAQ.

... but i need +1 diopter at infinity so I chose 1 + 0.5 = 1.5 diopter correction lens for my Ms and it works fine for me.

Sure it does. Because your diopter value for infinity plus 0.5 dpt is your diopter value for 2 m.

Answer: The short answer is that it is best to try different diopter corrections with your camera to see what suits you personally. An Opthamologist/Optometrist or spectacles retail outlet should be able to assist. You should be able to look through your camera with a range of temporary lenses as used to determine spectacles prescriptions.

I cannot see much ambiguity here.

O1af, this FAQ, like the M9 one, is open for contributions by anyone. Any clarification, especially with some authoritative references, would be welcomed. It is a complex and confusing issue.

Having struggled with this issue, I can confirm that the best way to get the correct answer for oneself is to take your camera to visit your optician. Mine was interested and happy to help.

Even the opticians who use those wonderful automated devices that look like a submarine periscope still have the individual lenses to use with children who are too small to use the "periscope".
