How much better is the M9 than the M8?

I cannot recall anybody raving about frameline accuracy - the only remark that comes somewhere close was the observation that it is not too difficult to compensate for system-induced frameline shift with experience. Apart from that the framelines are accurate - at one distance, be it one or two meters.

. . . how much of an improvement is it? Enough to justify the difference in price? Better by a bit, half, miles...?

Compared to the M9, the M8 is almost a half frame camera. You can almost fit two M8 sensors in the area of one M9 sensor. I only mention it because it may come as a surprise to anyone who hasn’t realised that the M9’s 36 x 24 mm sensor is very nearly twice the size of the M8’s 27 x 18 mm sensor.

Bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better but, in the case of sensor size, it often does.

The M8 image cuts off the extreme edges beyond Y'=16mm

For the blurred edges and increased vignetting in the range Y'=16-21mm, you need the M9.

Example below is Leica data for the Summilux 50 ASPH at f/2.8

I have an M9 -- and a M8 that is a backup. The cameras are sufficiently alike that the M8 is an adequate backup for the M9, and sufficiently different that having the choice, I will pick the M9 every time. Part of that is wanting to shoot wide and wanting my 16 or 18 or 21 or 24mm lenses to cover the full frame. High ISO is not something I do frequently so the slightly better performance of the M9 is not a driver. But I am one of those who also prefers the menu system etc of the M9 over the M8. All these things are what works for me and I would never try to argue "right" or "wrong".

My backup is an X1, which would fill in in the event of an emergency. I have never seen any direct comparison between the files of the M8 and X1, but I don't want to start some kind gear wars.

No gear war. All a matter of what you need. I happen to have an X1 and thought it could be my M9 backup, but I just couldn't acclimate to composing on screen, to autofocus and lack of anything other than 35mm equivalent. With the new firmware, manual focus on X1 is now more feasible and I just might give it another try.

The M9 allows me to use my favorite lens, the Summilux 50 asph, at my preferred focal length. It became the M9's body cap, whereas with the M8 it was used for probably 10% of the shots or so. Reason enough for me to upgrade.

As far as the two bodies and improvements are concerned, Jaap sums it up best.

While I agree with the comments others have made about the superiority of the M9, The main issue for me was FF as opposed to 1.3x.

I had been using Film Leicas for years and using an M8 meant I couldn't use my lenses as I always had. Moving to an M9 felt like coming home again. I could use the mid-range lenses (35, 50) the way I always had. Also, I have always enjoyed wide-angle images and I didn't have to step into specialized lenses to get the results I wanted.

To me not much difference between M8 - M9 in real world use, both have advantages and disadvantages. This is very similar to say a Nikon D300 to a Nikon D3 - for all intents and purposes the pics look identical from either camera. I am at the half way house as I have a M8.2 which I happen to think in the best looking of the M digital cameras and with the shutters of the M9 and M8.2 being identical I suppose that the M8.2 is almost a M9 but with the smaller sensor. If I had to choose though I would go for my M8.2 over my M9 because it just seems to be a slightly better camera with just a little bit more "soul" to it. Nothing wrong with the M9 but I just like using the M8.2 more.

The D300 sensor is rubbish compared to the D3 or D700, sorry

I think a better comparison is the Canon 7D to the 5Dii. both can do 3200 easy but the 7D has snow at the pixel level, whereas the 5Dii has a little grain and a lot more PP latitude

i recently upgraded my m8 to an m9:

biggest improvement is the better iso and that the focal lengths are the same as on my film leica...picture quality is just outstanding in my opinion...

This much better:

I---------------------------------------------------------I-------------I

........................................................M8..........M9

Still adding a touch of entertainment and factual too ! I like it.

For me, the me,the M9 has liberated color photography - the greatest significant change in my work for forty years for full-frame 35mm work - a blessing and liberation towards color film work which I shunned for forty years.

I liked my M8

I love my M9

Reasons? Chiefly -

Exp comp on the dial - now finally makes it usable

High ISO - different league

Soft release - sharper pics and just more responsive

Colour - best I've seen in the digital world

There's also some nice menu tweaks and others touches (battery info for example) that show they've listened, and all round it's just a better camera. And all the above ignores the sensor size, which is great too. I angsted for nearly two years over whether I could justify one - four days into ownership I wonder why I waited so long :D

I still have and use my M8, am still very happy with it but will eventually change to a full frame M at some point. The lack of initial availability initially tempered my 'want' for the new camera, now i am happy to carry on using it.
