Oh, thanks. I have a Mac. I will go to Stuffit and see if it works. Hmm, I didn't know any of this.

Once you have unzipped the file, put the unzipped file on your desktop. If you have a card reader, put in a newly formatted card and drag the file onto it. Then you can eject the card and put it in the camera. Start the camera up holding down the info button and away you go.

"but the easiest way to update is to extract the file and save it on your desktop then copy the file to a SD Card (not in the DCIM folder)"

That is the relevant detail for people who are having trouble installing the firmware update. I had a problem too at first (on a Mac) because I was putting the file in the DCIM folder, so it didn't show up when I turned on the camera (holding the info button.) I don't know about Windows, but on a Mac, in the Finder, in View set "as columns" and make sure that you drop the file in left column.

Re the update itself, I haven't spent too much time with it yet, but am really liking the new, improved manual focusing with the distance scale. I can't wait to try out zone focusing with it on the street. (Btw, I've been reading this forum since I was first thinking about buying an X1, but this is the first time I've posted.)

O.K. guys. Thank you for all of your help and I'm sorry I am such a ludite. I figured it out. I said "yes" to the format, took out my SD card, plugged it into my computer and dragged the firmware update on top of the SD card icon. I then put the SD card back into my camera and followed the version 2.0 update and it is now complete. It takes much better pictures than before. Here is my very first Version 2.0 photo:

If I didn"t know better I would swear that Ansel Adams had an X1 way back then!

I'm surprised at the increase in af speed in low light...it's really notable, particularly on repeat shots at similar distances. I'll be shooting in Chicago tomorrow...I'll be interested in seeing what the new firmware does for street shooting..should be great.

Don't forget to check out the Vivan Maier Exhibit at the Cultural Center( Vivian Maier - Her Discovered Work) being called one of the greatest street photographers of the 20th century now- amazing story. Free exhibit and only showing through the 3rd when they will then be going all over the world- but she was in Chicago first.

Also- Central Camera Company- family run by same people since 1899. First and last camera shop in Chicago and Leica dealer.

I'll be in Hyde Park on campus. If you are around feel free to shoot me a PM. I always have my X1.

Ha ha.. It doesn't take better pictures than before. Quality hasn't changed, but procedures did changed. You can now have a fully manual camera at this form factor. And even if focus is by wire, with no tactile feedback, it's still full manual control. It's a very lovely camera

Tried the new firmware update to see if the improvement in jpeg from camera is evident. Here's the first shot at the Marina barrage where I walk my dog.

Andy,

Honestly I am not sure coz I do not have a second X1 with the old FW, but I am working with jpeg for this shot and at the original size the photo looks okay. Will look up some older jpeg photos with the old FW to reference, though it will be from a different vantage point.

MAybe I should have upgraded AFTER I shot with the old firmware, but didnt think of that! :)

With respect, the above shot doesn't show us anything apart from the fact that the camera still works.

To show anything meaningful, one would have to set up the camera and take two shots, one before, one after the update, but with identical settings.

Andy,

Guess that option is no longer open...

What is noticeable is that AF in very dim light is very much faster. And the MF I fiddled for a while looks great particularly the green bar which shows the depth in focus. A neat feature IMO.

I guess I don't get out enough. I didn't know that the Marina Bay area was open already. Last time I saw the area there was nothing but construction going on.

Just updated my X1 and the AF does "seem" a bit faster. Haven't really tried the new MF features yet.
