michali Posted March 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) M9 & 90mm Elmarit Leopard Seals are among Antarctica’s top predators second only to the Orca or Killer Whale. They spend most of the summer months swimming in the water and hunting in the pack ice just offshore. They possess a full jaw of teeth with razor sharp canines about 2cm to 3cm long. There have been several reported attacks on humans and a few years ago a snorkelling biologist in Antarctica was attacked by a leopard Seal and dragged underwater to her death. Earlier in the day three of us did a scuba dive in dry suits in this bay; a friend of mine who is a wildlife cinematographer wanted to get footage of these seals underwater. I really wasn't very comfortable as the water was rather murky, and I knew these guys were around. A couple of years ago while diving in the Galapagos I had a Fur Seal yank my flipper off my foot and disappear into the deep with it. These Leopard Seals are in their favorite summer habitat, floating around on the ice waiting for an opportunity to hunt a penguin or other birds and seals..... or the odd scuba diver Thanks for viewing. k-hawinkler Posted March 7, 2011 Share #3 Posted March 7, 2011 Hi Mike, That's a rather fierce looking seal and you got his/her attention. Are you in an inflatable boat just above the sea surface? Another set of stunning images. Thanks, K-H.
stuny Posted March 7, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 7, 2011 Mike - Superb, especially #1. Of course considering how fond I am of one of their main food sources I'm not their greatest fan.
