1913Photography Posted February 27, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, new here, new to Leica. Sold all my Nikon Gear to get a new M8.2 with a 28mm Zeiss lens. Today, now 6 days later from purchase date, I had a chance to take it out and get some shots and really get to know the camera in the great outdoors. First I noticed a small brown stain like burn impression on the preview screen, right in the middle about 1 cm in size, more noticeable when photo's are being previewed that are bright, clear bright background Tonight I tried to register the camera on the Leica site and was not very happy when the serial number portion was rejected; stating the camera was already in their system or not a valid number....i checked 4 times, the number was right. I bought this camera new, well I was told it was new. Everything was in the box, clean and no question it was new.......now I think this must have been a demo or worse was bought than returned and never repaired....... I will go back this week to Mainz and return it, I already filed 2 complaints at the customer service site on Leica and the Customer comments web page. FYI: The price I paid was full, so yes it was sold to me as new. Any course of action, anyone have a similar incident? I will keep you updated as this transpires

bernie.lcf Posted February 27, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 27, 2011 Regarding the registration: It pays off to call customer support at Leica directly (the telephone number is on the website) 1. they are very nice and competent 2. they can check the system I had similar problems and they were due to some issue on the website software itself. Call Leica - they will know whether the camera had been registered before. In my experience, Leica does reply to emails and they do it in a nice and competent way. However, these things can be solved with a quick phone call. Why bother with email?
1913Photography Posted February 27, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted February 27, 2011 Thanks for the reply, I will call in the morning and see what they say!
Mikael Siirilä Posted February 28, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 28, 2011 You should be able to read from the files how many times the shutter has been fired. (There's a thread for that.) That should reveal if it really was virgin when you bought it. My M8.2 body has developed the "coffee ring" in the screen after heavy winter use. Something to do with condensed moisture and big changes in temperature. Perhaps somebody just used the serial number to get the free UV/IR cut filters. jaapv Posted February 28, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 28, 2011 You are aware that the camera was discontinued in September 2009? As you say it was new, so maybe new old stock, but there are very few around of those nowadays.
1913Photography Posted February 28, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted February 28, 2011 Thanks all for the advice! # of Shots: Confirmed using the methods in the Leica Forum as 402 shots, that would be spot on, 260 from me, probably 140+ from Leica before shipping Coffee Stain: Spoke with Leica today, they are sending delivery service to my home to pick it up on WED, they said yes it is a problem. They will replace screen or entire camera plus include a cleaning of the sensor Serial #: The second person I spoke to, stated that their software is jacked up and they would do a manual entry an get me registered........good, now I can get my 2 free U/V filters and a free one year magazine subscription I will continue to update as this progresses. 1913Photography Posted February 28, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted February 28, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) You are aware that the camera was discontinued in September 2009? As you say it was new, so maybe new old stock, but there are very few around of those nowadays. Yes, I absolutely understand the date/year of productions and the end year. But as with any consumer warning signs tend to trigger concern. It was their last one, they tried to get me into an M9, that's not doable now. Thanks for your advice! jaapv Posted February 28, 2011 Share #8 Posted February 28, 2011 I would say return it if possible, get the refund and get a good used one for less with guaranty from one of the dealers who advertise on the forum. Then you have a good feeling and a good camera. Otoh the course you have taken should see you all right as well.
blimey Posted February 28, 2011 Share #9 Posted February 28, 2011 Welcome to the club. I had my repair in December 2010 for dust problem under the LCD. I got it back fairly quickly and it was perfect. There was no coffee ring stain that I noticed. It is Feb 2011 and now in Asia for work and I brought the M8.2 with me. Shooting clouds or buildings with white background, I see the coffee stain. I am sending it back to NJ. It is pretty common and known to Leica. I pray Leica repairs it free of charge as the stain was never there during the LCD dust problem.
jevidon Posted March 1, 2011 Share #10 Posted March 1, 2011 I have never experienced the coffee ring stain on my M8, either with the original LCD or with the upgraded sapphire screen that they installed for me as part of my upgrade. Has the stain ever appeared on the upgrade sapphire screen or just on the original plastic one?
