The thumbs up scratch my m8.... Though it was very small. I put the Velcro as you desrcibed on my m9.... It works great. Thanks for the tip, it really does balance the thumbs up nicely on the hot shoe.

If someone says that their thumbs up scratched their camera I simply believe them

that it did. They are speaking of their own experience which may not be the case

for yours. Apples and oranges.

This has nothing to do with the inherent quality of the device or possible stress on the

hot-shoe.

I offered a practical and simple solution for preventing the possibility, too simple

I guess.

The Thumbs up scratched and dented my top piece- due to my not following instructions. Must have loosened (happens when you use flash occasionally, and the end of the Thumbs Up was hit, denting the case as it rocked on the rubber spacer. Did put electrical tape on the back which helped.

My problem is I tend not to tighten the lock screw as Tim recommends- just to much of a pain when I have to keep taking it off to put on a flash. If you tighten the set screw, you should have no problem. Because the shoe has loosened after the hit, the Thumbs Up will eventually side back during use, making the issue worse. While a beautiful design, in the end I put on the Thumbie and am quite happy.

The good new is I must have stopped using it at the right time. My flash and viewfinders were extremely tight, having to slowly work them back and forth to get them off the camera- they fit great now.

Redridge:

I am so glad it worked for you. Anything I say is based on experience ….

but this hardly means that I am always right and I certainly don't think I am.

But, when I am wrong, I'll admit it and find the better solution. I enjoy the

exchange of information on this post and I have learned much! Good luck, and cheers.

Just got my Thumbie in the mail today! It traveled across the pond and arrived via post in less than a week. It comes in a nice little black box complete with extra tape. Installation was easy and it feels rock solid. Smaller than I imagined (a good thing) and the shape/angle feels very natural. I've used this tape before and I know it's not going anywhere. Very strong stuff. Plus it leaves my hot shoe available and there is no chance of it damaging my M9. A real bargain, too. LOVE IT! Thanks again, Steve!

I have read all the comparisons between Thumbie and Thumbs up. By the way, these seem to be two excellent products very well thought out and produced. Also, this thread has been very helpful except for one thing. How easy or difficult is it to get the thumbie off the camera when one might want to either sell the camera or whatever? Does it leave a mark or scratch or adhesive stuff. Also, does the new thumbs up csep-1 address the issues of possible rocking and denting.

Thanks,

Mark

Does anyone know if the thumbs up has received Leica's blessing. I mean, can some of these after market products make a warranty null and void?

Mark, I answered this in the other current 'grip' thread but I'll add the answer here as well. The Thumbie is removed by giving it a firm twist which tears the core of the foam tape, the residue of glue and tape is then rolled up into a ball with your finger and thats about it, very simple. Otherwise and in normal use the tape is very robust and stron if fitted properly. The Thumbie doesn't leave a mark, perhaps the only evidence would be a cleaner area of paint that has been protected over the time the Thumbie has been fitted.

The next product, currently in testing, a finger grip. I've been noting some of the problems people have had with the regular add on grips, most notable being that they can put your hand into an odd position with vertical shots, they may require special baseplates, they are bigger than necessary because of how they fit, and they are heavy (compared to this). But at the same time I've tried to design it to take into account the need for a relaxed grip for using the camera for long periods, big enough to help those people with maybe some arthritis, and that it still allows the camera to be easily slipped in and out of the camera bag without snagging (it doesn't stick out as far as an Elmar M). In addition to the M8 and M9 it will fit the MP, M7, M6 etc, or any other M so long as you don't mind the self timer being blocked.

Thy sell or link to it through LFI- and the thumbs up (overtightened) separated my top plate and made my hotshot loose, and Leica repaired it under warranty.

One quarter turn, no more (although I overtightened when this became loose)

Sadly the X1 isn't built like the M's

This is what is know as ‘’mechanic’s feel’’, which is the ability too gauge and feel

what tightening is appropriate for the what-ever you are tightening. You could warp,

break, or ruin the hot-shoe by overusing that little allen wrench. In the case of the

Thumbs-Up…. if you add the piece of the soft-side velcro to the rear of the gadget

next to the rubber pad…. all that is needed is a light snugging of the screw.

Yes but what happened was a bit more complicated.

I originally tightened it to spec- one quarter turn just like the video on the site.

But as I mentioned in another forum I started keeping the camera in a coat pocket in the winter. Somewhere, somehow, additional pressure was leveraged through the thumbs up (maybe getting up out of a chair the thumbs up got caught under a table) and it was loose and wobbly to hold all of a sudden. Figuring it had just loosened I tightened it more, and it definitely didn't feel overtightened, and this initially settled the issue. But that additional pressure caused the new problem caused by over tightening eventually.

Has anyone used a Thumbie with a Luigi half case? I have one that has had the cutout for the Thumbs Up - will the Thumbie fit in the same space? Thanks, Peter

I did a little, just a little, surgery on the case to have it clear the Thumbie. The case still covers the end of the Thumbie near the snap. Then used a little CAA along the edge of the cut, and a black permeant marker, and it works fine. I found the key was to use a very sharp razor knife to cut the leather while resting on a block of wood for backup.
