jaapv Posted February 22, 2011 Share #21 Posted February 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello Jaap, Yes, i always have a B&W uv filter on the lens for protection and i used filters on other lenses ..35mm Lux asph and 35mm Summarit, neither of which flared..Could i have a problem with my lens?Well, to begin with I would remove the filter and see if it still flares. By the shape of the flare the filter is strongly suspect in your shot.

A heavy star clone of the inverted cone hood seems like a good idea as well. Noel
SJP Posted February 22, 2011 Share #23 Posted February 22, 2011 Hopefully my 50/1.4 ASPH will return in the next couple of days, after being tweaked by dr. Leica, the current thread seems to suggest you need a separate hood rather than the built in extendible hood. Is that correct? I always thought the 50 summilux ASPH to be one of the most flare resistant lenses. <= full stop
Xmas Posted February 22, 2011 Share #24 Posted February 22, 2011 Hi I'd get a heavystar for two reasons if it offers better shading I'd use it if offers better protection if you drop the camera Noel
ho_co Posted February 22, 2011 Share #25 Posted February 22, 2011 My 50mm Lux asph flares very easily, maybe i should have it looked at. Lucy-- The built-in 50 Summilux asph hood is virtually useless with a filter attached to the lens because the filter sits so far forward. You could try an add-on hood, or just try shooting without the filter. I think Jaap is right about the filter being the cause, but the flare may also come from something inside the camera reflecting. I had a similar arc (thought not identical) on my M8. It would occur with several different lenses, but always only when the illumination came from the right. I sent the camera to Leica and they fixed it, though I don't know what they did. Sample from my 21: Welcome, dear visitor! shootinglulu Posted February 22, 2011 Share #26 Posted February 22, 2011 The lens is going back to Leica for a check via Ffordes who want a cd of pictures of the flare which of course i had deleted so tomorrow i have to get some more examples and hopefully if the weather brightens a bit in drab Dorset i can and also test with the filter off. Generally though i would not like to use the lens without a filter and other people have no problem with the hood? In the picture i posted i am pretty sure i was using the hood but never the less the light really was not very bright..that day i lost a lot of shots through flare.. I will ask Ffordes if i could send the M9 too to be sure,,it will be horrid but they say the turn around is two weeks at the moment. Thanks very much for your help. The coatings on the front of you lens are perfectly capable to withstand normal use ( and even a surprising amount of abuse, albeit not recommended)
ho_co Posted February 27, 2011 Share #29 Posted February 27, 2011 ... I'd get a heavystar for two reasons if it offers better shading I'd use it if offers better protection if you drop the camera ... Noel-- Can you tell me anything about a heavystar hood? I found a company with a similar name, which seems to be a collection seller, with bits and drabs of stuff. Couldn't find a 46mm cylindrical metal hood or a 55mm cylindrical metal hood there. Any information would be appreciated.
otto.f Posted February 27, 2011 Share #30 Posted February 27, 2011 The 28 Summicron asph is often said to be Leica's most flare-resistant lens. I usually don't use a hood with mine for that reason and I don't recall having a problem with in-lens flare or with loss of contrast from veiling glare (flare). Pete. I totally agree from experience

pico Posted February 27, 2011 Share #32 Posted February 27, 2011 A slightly more concise link to Heavystar's Leica lens shades/hoods. Heavystar sells a whole lot of merchandise, but still responds to email on the same day. His stuff is of good quality, too.
ho_co Posted February 27, 2011 Share #33 Posted February 27, 2011 Thanks very much, Alan et al, for the Heavystar links. Much better than what I had turned up. And pico, you even did my culling for me! Appreciated!
