Advertisement Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Hi cbretteville, Take a look here Luminous Landscape review: VC15/4.5 on the M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jamie Roberts Posted January 25, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 25, 2007 FWIW, I love the CV 15 on the M8. The image quality is excellent, and it's easy to focus, and it's a steal. Yes, it would be nice if it was range-finder coupled, and I'd gladly pay more for that too! One correction to Michael's otherwise excellent thoughts. At least when I bought my CV 15 from Stephen Gandy at Cameraquest, he offered me the right finder (the CV 21mm) for the M8 instead of the wider finder... no extra charge. Details here: Voigtlander Lenses Leica Mount

innerimager Posted January 25, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 25, 2007 hey Tim and Jamie- Steve also sent me the 21mm finder rather than the 15, so it was no extra cost, and it is a very nice finder. So I would recommend buyers ask for this, at least from cameraquest, even if it's possible to do without. Anyway, as everyone seems to agree...great lens! ....peter
ChrisC Posted January 25, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 25, 2007 I use mine with the M8's regular built-in finder..........Tim Tim - Or anyone else using the M8 finder when using the CV15 mm instead of a shoe mounted finder. Is the M8 finder the same proportions as M8 images? What additional care is necessary when framing mid distance focused images? Care to speculate how the technique would work for the 16 mm setting on the 16/18/21 Tri Elmar? ...................Chris
bradreiman Posted January 25, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 25, 2007 chris-i would say there is a bit of guesswork to this method. with the m8 finder i look around a bit to frame. im really used to the field of view of this lens tho so i know what its going to see. the m8 finder doesn't come close to covering the 15mm (20mm crop) field of view....b
mike prevette Posted January 25, 2007 Share #7 Posted January 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been using a 21/28 Ricoh finder with the 15 and cz 21, I've been very happywith the combo. I don't like trying to use the m8 finder for this stuff as I have to mash my face into the screen to get close in enough. _mike
marknorton Posted January 25, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 25, 2007 I'm happy to use a 21mm lens without an aux finder. It's all you can see and a bit more. With the CV15, that's quite a bit wider and I use the Leica 21/24/28 finder set to 21.
ChrisC Posted January 25, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 25, 2007 Bradley, Mike, Mark, - Thank you for your contributions, they have helped me. Like some others, I am waiting to see whether Leica sorts out the 16/18/21 Tri-elmar hood/filter issues that Mark in particular has discussed in other threads, in the meantime I'm figuring out which external finder [or finders] would suit me best if I finally opt for that lens. A well made 21/24 finder would probably suit my needs, but I doubt if one exists. Nobody replied to my question as to whether the proportions of the M8 camera finder [that's length and height] are the same as M8 images, if the answer is common knowledge I must have missed it. .........................Chris
wparsonsgisnet Posted January 25, 2007 Share #10 Posted January 25, 2007 What we REALLY need here is a Leica 15mm f2.0 asph lens (or f1.4, but who's kidding whom)! I would buy such a lens at the moment it was conceived, much less announced.

Stan Raucher Posted January 26, 2007 Share #16 Posted January 26, 2007 I just spoke with Stephen Gandy at Cameraquest. Unfortunately he is no longer able to substitute the 21mm finder for the 15mm finder with the purchase of a VC15/4.5. The 21mm finder is $128. Jager Posted January 26, 2007 Share #18 Posted January 26, 2007 Ok, a dumb question... reading Michael's article (thanks Carl!), he indicates this lens is "not rangefinder-coupled". Just to clarify what that means - there's no way to focus this lens other than by the distance scale scribed on the lens barrel. Correct? Jeff
mike prevette Posted January 26, 2007 Share #19 Posted January 26, 2007 Your right Jeff. However the lens has enormous depth of field. Also you would be amazed at how accurate our eyes are at triangulating distances. Most movie cameras are actually not focused by the operators looking through the lens, but by assistants standing next to the camera "pulling focus" Most of the time with nothing more than a few marks to go by. I did this for years and have been amazed at how good you can learn to "see" distances. We would routinely have 85mm F1.2 primes on a camera, or running around hand held with 25mm 1.2 lenses, and it was expected that you'd get perfect focus or it was your ass out the door. There are lots of tricks to this, but even without the tricks it's amazing how good our eyes are. _mike
