Great Blue Heron

This particular bird has been hanging out at the local fish hatchery (Sacramento County California) for a number of years and we've gotten to know each other quite well, but the lighting and backgrounds where (s)he likes to fish have never been to my liking until now.

The water flow in the hatchery's settling pond was always too busy and contrasty, and I wanted to show the heron's motionlessness so I used a 1/2 second shutter speed to blur the water. Lacking an ND or polarizing filter for the lens I waited for a dark foggy day so that I could get correct exposure (ISO 100, f/19). I also wore rubber muck boots & waded into the water to get a jumble of rocks out of the background.

Good thinking and a great shot as a reward!
