wildlightphoto Posted January 20, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted January 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) This particular bird has been hanging out at the local fish hatchery (Sacramento County California) for a number of years and we've gotten to know each other quite well, but the lighting and backgrounds where (s)he likes to fish have never been to my liking until now. Â The water flow in the hatchery's settling pond was always too busy and contrasty, and I wanted to show the heron's motionlessness so I used a 1/2 second shutter speed to blur the water. Lacking an ND or polarizing filter for the lens I waited for a dark foggy day so that I could get correct exposure (ISO 100, f/19). I also wore rubber muck boots & waded into the water to get a jumble of rocks out of the background. Â Â R8/DMR, 280mm f/4 APO-Telyt-R, tripod, muck boots. All comments welcome. Your Old Dog Posted January 21, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted January 21, 2011 If ever there was a "wall hanger" it's this shot. Quite possibly the best shot of a Blue Heron I have seen and they are a well documented species. Great job!

wildlightphoto Posted January 22, 2011 Author Share #14 Â Posted January 22, 2011 Thanks all for your comments. There was a lot of trial-and-error that went into making this photo, fortunately this particular heron was patient enough to allow several long exposures.
