jaapv Posted January 17, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) For the third time in two weeks C1-6 pro created a kernel panic. Has anybody else got this problem?
Advertisement Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Hi jaapv, Take a look here Capture One kernel panic. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ho_co Posted January 18, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 18, 2011 Jaap--I've seen one other mention, not particularly helpful, at http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-post-processing-forum/153889-capture-1-new-great-5.html#post1575419. Luke_Miller Posted January 18, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 18, 2011 No kernal panic since I'm on Windows, but C1-6 is most certainly the least stable application I've seen in years. And it does not fail gracefully, usually loss of work occurs.
cliffp Posted January 18, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 18, 2011 Hi Jaapv I am the person who experienced the kernel panic referred to in the other thread. I had several crashes (maybe 3) in one day. I was comparing LR3 and Capture 1 pro at the time. I had both applications running but only one was active at the time (LR3 was minimised). My machine is a < 1 year old iMac with i7 and 8GB ram I contacted Apple who talked me through a PRAM reset. They told me to take the machine to an Apple store if the problem recurrs. I ran idisc to check the hard drive. I also ran the Hardware Tool (short 3 minute test) and no problems were revealed. Following advice on the other thread, I did what used to be called an archive install. The latest version of OSX doesn't have the option for an archive install, the nearest equivalent is a simple reinstall which preserves your data and most settings. So far the only issue I have had after carrying this out was discovering that my Epson R2880 printer driver didn't work. I had to reinstall the printer software. I haven't had a problem with C1 since but have not used it much. It is beginning to look as though there may be an issue with C1 rather than a hardware cause. archi4 Posted January 18, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 18, 2011 I have not had the kernel panic on my new iMac, but did have it once on my older iMac with no consequences. I have had some strange magenta and green artifacts and light flashes when I have CL on automatic but absolutely no problems after turning that off and setting it to never. No crashes whatsoever even with LR3 and photoshop CS5 running.
jaapv Posted January 18, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted January 18, 2011 According to the log report it is very clearly related to C1. I would not think it is neccesary to blame Mac or Snow Leopard. I even know when it happens - when I use the quick adjust panel on my lefthand monitor where the preview is displayed large. So I contacted Phase One support. It is good to know I'm not alone

Can you reproduce it from a single monitor? What kind of video card do you have?

jaapv Posted January 18, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted January 18, 2011 The log clearly identifies Capture one as culprit. I'll try what a single monitor does, good idea:) . The graphic card is an ATI Radeon HD 5770 1 GB
jaapv Posted January 18, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted January 18, 2011 be certain you have the most recent driver installedI find mine works without a hitch on my Windows 64 box I think so - I got the machine new from Apple a few weeks ago. Jamie Roberts Posted January 18, 2011 Share #11 Posted January 18, 2011 I think so - I got the machine new from Apple a few weeks ago. Driver problems seem to be rare on Mac. Don't really know; I know ATI's / AMD's drivers can be flaky, however. FWIW, the only time I ever had extended incompatibility with C1 was when I had a Radeon 4870; as soon as I switched to an NVidia card (and drivers) the problem went away. So this is a bit of a long shot, but it does seem peculiar to me.. and the Radeon--much as I like the hardware--has a history for sure. You might also do a full RAM check. An even longer shot, but your computer is relatively new (right?), and might possibly be subject to a burn-in defect (particularly RAM).
Nicoleica Posted January 18, 2011 Share #12 Posted January 18, 2011 Jaap, have you tried starting up your machine in 32bit kernel mode? (Hold down the 3 and the 2 keys when starting up.) This might help if C1 is a bit wobbly running in 64 bit mode, and might help to identify the root problem.
Jamie Roberts Posted January 18, 2011 Share #13 Posted January 18, 2011 be certain you have the most recent driver installedI find mine works without a hitch on my Windows 64 box Me too, FWIW--no problems whatsoever on 64 bit windows (in fact it seems more stable than V5). But I'm still going to bet on the video card software.
jaapv Posted January 18, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted January 18, 2011 I think you may have pinpointed the problem, Jamie. The video card is a bit dodgy on C1 anyway, it produces funny patterns sometimes when cropping, for instance. I think I may exchange it for a more capable one. ho_co Posted January 18, 2011 Share #15 Posted January 18, 2011 OT question--How do you change out a video card on iMac? I know they're assembled with different constituents, but I had rather thought that you got what you bought.
jaapv Posted January 18, 2011 Author Share #16 Posted January 18, 2011 It is not an iMac- it is a MacPro.
Nicoleica Posted January 18, 2011 Share #17 Posted January 18, 2011 Jaap. I've been trying to do some research for you, and I have a question. How many graphics cards do you have in your Mac? I found an entry on Capture-1's site (Knowledge base article #1720) that mentions that if using the open-CL/GPU support, it cannot handle multiple GPU's (cards?). There is a link on that article to a process for disabling that feature in case of crashes. This might have nothing at all to do with your problem, but it's the best I can find so far. archi4 Posted January 18, 2011 Share #18 Posted January 18, 2011 Jaap, have you set CL to never in the preferences. I also got strange magenta/green artifacts when cropping until I set it to never. maurice

Maurice-- What is "CL" and where is it in Preferences? Is it in Mac System Preferences or in Capture One Preferences? Sorry. Out of my league. Not that familiar with Capture One. Thanks! No - I have one card - but I noticed just now that Adobe Bridge was open in the background. (It was set to start-up at login) I switched it of and C1 feels much more stable now. The red weird artefacts on cropping seem to have disappeared. If this is not the reason I will have to call my local Mac expert to find out what open CL/GPU means. Edit - It is in preferences; it was on auto, I set it to never.
