"Newbie to Leica"

It's abut 80 F or 27 C today and it's winter. And the film I left in my garage where it could get up to 100F and 38C quite frequently over the years. The 1 roll where I got really good result, last week, was one from the fridge an Ektar 100

I had to look up "diffident" English not my first language. You are probably right when it comes to photography. I have never spent enough time with it to gain that level of confidence, so when I saw this forum, I jumped on board to hopefully get going as my "love" in cameras is with Leica, and has been since 1976 when I bought my R3. Thanks for the encouragements, I will spend time (and money ha ha) earning it Preben

I think that replacing the rubber gaskets is an excellent idea, for both the R3 and R4, they are both, like me, a wee up in age ha ha

I just spent an hour searching for a place selling Leica parts, to no avail!

Anyone who can provide a link where I can get those gaskets?

Thanks

Preben

Contact ebay seller 'interslice' - I bought a kit from him for my R3 (he used to sell complete DIY kits as well as the pre cut kits).

Hi

The interslice kits are good, if it was not a Leica I would instead suggest a craft knife several rulers and cutting up the mouse mat.

Remvng the tacky old material is the most difficult and time consuming task, you need to keep the debris out of the camera shutter and mirror box.

P.S. I apologise about the strange words, your English is excllent.

Preben,

For P mode to work as designed on the, R4 Leica recommends you set the aperture to the smallest f-stop the lens offers (f16 or f22). The camera then adjusts the shutter speed and aperture as you release the shutter. Setting the aperture to f16/22 is necessary to give the camera the full range of apertures t chose from.

In A mode you set the aperture and the camera selects the shutter speed according to what the meeter thinks is correct (18% gray and all that).

Here is a link to a pdf of the R4 user's guide

Enjoy you cameras!

Carl

Recently I discovered that when shooting in Programme mode on R8 if you set aperture half way it will still work but with limited choice of F stops, i bet it would work like this on R4 as well.

I think this is really big deal as no other camera system where lenses are locked at minimum f stop can shoot with controlled F stop in P mode - and no software or menu settings in sight :).

I loaded the R4 with another new Ektar 100 to try out while getting in gear to order a kit for each of my cameras. And I will use the "A" mode as I did the first time I had a little success, just to see if it was because of my other choices of settings and lenses that caused the mishaps

Quite a number of combinations to try if I need to get through them all (lenses and modes) ha ha

Thanks to you all

Preben

P.S. I to have a website where I post my pictures but it's of my products (sculptures) rather than "just" pictures for the fun or money ha ha Pridbor's Virtual Art Gallery I hope it's OK to provide you all a link? If not I shall refrain in the future.

But the point being the OP asked about the difference between Leica M and R systems. The R lenses are every bit as good as comparable M glass IMO - can you spot the difference?

...... IMO.......

No one can argue that it is "your opinion".

It is your opinion, and I am sure it is shared by many others too.

I don't think it is fair to state the main difference is just snobbery in the context of the "newbie OP".

(for the record, I am a big fan of the R series too, but they are difference beasts)

Where have I said the 'main difference is snobbery' ? Please actually read the question, and my answer.

Are you suggesting that a photo taken with an R and Summicron 50 will be noticeably different to the same photo taken with an M and 50 Summicron?

We do agree that the M and R systems are different, but the results will be comparable.

Mostly snobbery! Some will argue that the M is the only true Leica, and that M lenses are better - this is partly true, but only insofar as the latest newer designs, the R lenses are very good indeed many being famed Mandler designs. Personally I use both M and R systems, they're different tools and both have particular uses. They complement each other.
