It is a worry that a few people on this thread doubted that this listing was fake. Listings like these occur on ebay all the time- and generally target high priced items- very often cameras. They are generally similar- often you will see the seller has listed a bunch of high priced gear all of which has the same start bid price which is generally ridiculous given the actual value of the goods in question. They generally tell you to email the seller direct- but not always. Generally the 'seller' will have a hisytory of selling completely different goods. You cannot trust the feedback system in these cases: the feedback is fine but the account has been hijacked.

The scammers lift the photos from genuine auctions- and the descriptions. they hack an ebay account- list everything and the whole thing is usually gone (closed by ebay) within a day or two.

The sad fact is they must be very successful at ripping people off as these scams are ongoing and widespread for many years now. If they were not having success they would give up and try something else. If you use ebay you need to educate yourself as to how to spot a scam. The tired but true saying, 'if it looks too good to be true- it probably is' should be your guiding principle.

Who in their right mind would sell an m8 with lens for less than the value of the lens? I don't care how desperately you need money- you wouldn't do it.

I have been selling cameras on ebay for nearly 10 years now- and this has been going on for the last 5 years at least. It is interesting that one poster on this thread mentioned they emailed the scammer and there was some mention of Florida: I don't know why but a lot of scams seem to involve Florida.

This type of scam is very obvious: there are other versions that are more sophisticated. Some scammers set up there own legitimate accounts and make a few genuine sales before initiating a large scale scam. These can be harder to detect as they offer paypal payments and everything is done through the ebay system.

Last but not least: Do not be fooled by Paypal's or ebay's so called Buyer safety programs. Read the fine print. Paypal is highly misleading and gives people a false sense of security.

There was a similar thread back in Nov. -

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/148847-if-only-true.html

There the hijacking fraudster listed more than 11,000 expensive cameras and lenses on eBay, all for the exact same price and all with the inserted message to email him off eBay. Some of the fake sales were automatically showing up on this forum's Classifieds under eBay Offers. The real account owner sold only t-shirts and shoes!

Craigslist in just about every major city has an ad or two or three trying to scam people with the $2500.Noctilux bait!

Totally. Sometimes, just for fun I check around. It's amazing how many copies of entry you find the same time.

I did a quick search on a MP for sale on CL last year (that was listed locally). It was copied from Ebay, every word and photograph. East coast to west coast, camera was listed in CL for fraction of cost.

Since got curious, I actually replied to local ad to see what the response is. As expected, I got the reply that person is in UK....

I laughed and left at that. I did not even contact CL regarding it as I figure most people will figure out.

I am pretty sure every Leica owner (even not owner) knows value of Leica gear. So, they will never let go for such price.

I suspect that using UK as a location for scams into the US plays on the good sentiment quite a few folks here -including me- have towards the UK.

I would also like to point out that the scam is nearly 'no cost' to operate so there is almost no need for it to be at all efficient in any manner in any statistical sense. One poster noted finding a HiJacked eBay account listing 11,000 fraudulent high end cameras - it would only take a handful of suckers sending their money on a few of those listings for the crook behind it to have made tens of thousands of dollars.

Why were you expecting this scammer to be in the UK?

Why were you expecting this scammer to be in the UK?

I did not it in any bad way Andy. Sorry if that came that way. A lot of cases like this, including send me money one, often seem to use UK as their location.

One I contacted did not say s/he lived in UK, they say, s/he said is traveling in UK right now.
