Don't even think about buying this M8.2........

With a buy it now price of $1,700 it does seem a little low but maybe the guy needs the money. It is harder to sell a body with lens. Maybe harder isn't the right term. Fou get more for the body and lens when you sell them separately.

Maybe he is selling for some else that needs the money.

huh? based on what?

If you need to ask, go ahead and buy the camera..... You will be asked to wire the money via Western Union or bank transfer, will be directed to an 'eBay sponsored' escrow site.....

  • Buy it Now of US$1,700 for an M8.2 with an Elmarit ASPH 28mm?
  • Seller will cancel legitimate bids but will respond to emails?
  • Previous history totally unrelated to high end cameras.....

Give your head a shake....

Best,

Jan

Just how do you know this?

OK when you go to the seller full listing of item for sale the M8 is not listed.

I can't see a Buy It Now of any money, only an opening bid to be $410. Payment terms are via M/C, VISA/ Paypal etc. and there is always the first time that you sell a camera.

Maybe you are looking at a different listing from me.

The warning is based on the purported item 'lister' requesting that you email the person 'off-ebay' as part of the auction.

It's standard practice for the 'individuals' who Hi-Jack accounts to divert bidders off e-bay for communications.

It's because eBay messaging system for questions and such -often- emails the account owner along with generating an internal ebay message.

It's also -difficult- but not impossible to use a hijacked account to complete payment through ebay/paypal etc.

So.... easier to divert to OFF-eBAY for emailing and such.

Still no "Buy it now" button though.

Andy,

that is because it is a hijacked account - obviously the attempted sale is not going to go through eBay. If you check the actual seller's 'Items for Sale', this M8.2 is not even listed there - as 'Shootist' found out. The true owner of the account probably does not even know that he 'listed' and is 'selling' a Leica.

For all the doubters - go ahead and send the money but, do not come back here moaning that you have been duped. If it is too good to be true........

Best,

Jan

This has shown up several times over the last few months. The only variation is a different email address each time. I actually contacted the seller the first time I saw this last November. The warning flags for me, other than the low price and transaction details:

The seller was listed as living in NC but the email response said he was living in another state and that the camera was in Florida. He essentially did not answer a single question I asked, I.e. Extra pictures, history, where bought, etc. He only reiterated how he wanted do the transaction. I expect it will be up again soon with a different email address.

I saw something very similar but with an M9, some weeks ago. It was being offered at a "Buy-it-now" price of 2,000 USD:rolleyes:

As soon as I checked the seller's list and saw that they sold oriental jewelry exclusively, it was even more obvious that it was a hijack job.

I emailed the guy for a laugh and got this back :

Hello

This is a very good price because I want a quick sale. The buy it now price including shipping and insurance is US

$2000.00! Transaction will be handled by ebay, so we can both be protected and able to exchange feedback after

transaction is successfully closed! I will offer a 14 days inspection period for the item, so if by any reason you

are not satisfied with it, you can return it against a full refund! eBay is the insurer of this transaction and

you are covered up to US $2,000.00 so if you're ready for this purchase, I need to know your full name and address

so i can start the official procedure, and submit the deal through eBay.

Yeah, sure thing pal:p

That being said, it's not only with Leica. This looks pretty suspicious too

Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L USM Lens - eBay (item 220724912396 end time Jan-14-11 19:42:31 PST)

455 dollars? Let me guess, there's no actual glass in it.

I posted this a while back, stick to the advice here and there's much less chance of getting caught by a scammer! http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/145646-ebay-advice-anyone-buying-selling.html

A seller offering a 'too good to be true' deal and insisting on dialogue by direct e mail is a postive sign of a scam, basically to cut e bay out of the loop so that a) they don't pay any fees and can't be traced and B) you send the money directly to them so that there's no chance of ebay recovering it for you when you don't get the goods.

Looked like a pretty classic ebay hijacking.

They usually try to grab the accounts of high-volume sellers just before the weekend - figuring it might be a couple days before the real user notices anything.

I've reported a couple of those in the past to Ebay, which usually shuts them down pretty quickly.

Among the warning signs - a seller who is suddenly selling high-end items that he has never sold before. And, of course, a high-volume user who is blatantly telling you to complete the deal away from ebay. Any regular user knows that is against the terms of service.

Indeed, that's the pattern of the crook. And the price of $1,700 is exactly what he advertised in dozens of previous cracks.
