Elmarit 21mm Focus Problems

Hi all, I took some test shots with a used (but mint) 21mm elmarit lens, upon uploading them on Capture 1 (V6) I noticed that as soon as I moved the zoom slider to zoom into the picture it immediately blurs as if it was out of focus. otherwise the pictures are somewhat sharp.

Have anyone used the 21mm elmarit and had similar experience? Is the focal length of 21mm so "sensitive" that the slightest "zoom" would produce a blurred picture? or is that lens faulty?

Please advice...

Thank you

Maybe I misunderstood the question but this is a question regarding an Elmarit 21mm for the M system?

If so, I recently acquired a used Elmarit 21mm for my M9 and have been using it. It in fact shows a fair amount of latitude in focusing and producing a sharp picture. If you are having focusing issues, you may want to send it in to Leica for an inspection.

If I have misunderstood the question, please ignore.

Could you post some examples to see how the blurriness show up and where is it located (I mean, in the whole frame or only in a part of it) ? Is the Elmarit an ASPH version or the previous one ? It should be useful to know also at which distances the test shots have been taken, and at which f stop (wide open at 2,8, I suppose ?)

Just how much are you zooming in? Are you sure its the lens at fault or your expectations being disappointed by processing software and your monitor's resolution? There is a big difference between the sharpness you see in a large print, which can be fantastic, and that on the screen which can seem poor unless you have the experience to differentiate between the two outputs.

The 21mm Elmarit should be one of the easiest lenses to focus. It is a superb lens.

At first I wondered if your post-processing method and computer processing speed was taking time to render the magnified image for viewing. But your picture above suggests something wrong with the lens. I would take it up with the dealer/vendor before sending it to Leica. There must be some form of warranty.

It's not possible to tell from such a small image.

I bought a used 21 Elmarit ASPH about a year ago and immediately noticed that it was rear-focusing. I sent it to Solms and they fixed it up.

Can you post a link to a larger image?

Try pulling focus forward slightly compared with what the RF says and take another pic. Does it sharpen up? If so, yours rear-focuses too. (Or try the opposite to see if it's front-focusing).

What other lenses do you have? You need to be sure the camera's RF is accurate...
