Howiepix Posted January 6, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 6, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apple have today opened a new software store called the Mac App Store, Just perform a software update and Apple installs a new application in your menu bar, This allows you to download and update software packages, The good news is that I just purchased Aperture 3.1.1 for only £45 'Direct download 650Mb' I do not know if this is a special first day price but it normally costs about £170, A lot of the software on there seems a lot cheaper than normal, Howie
Advertisement Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Hi Howiepix, Take a look here Mac Application Store. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted January 6, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 6, 2011 Howie, I think that they are relying on more casual buyers - it's easier to buy something if the means of doing so is so simple. I'll have to check it out, certainly that Aperture price is very good indeed.
andybarton Posted January 6, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 6, 2011 If I'd just paid £200 for Aperture, I'd be feeling a tad pissed off today... I will be interested to see what's what when I get home.
Nicoleica Posted January 6, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 6, 2011 I've just installed the update and looked from here. Aperture is going for under €70. That's quite a saving.
sblitz Posted January 6, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 6, 2011 thanks for checking this out, will look when i get home. i don't use aperture, capture one mostly, lr3 and photoshop. a bit reluctant to add yet another photo software package to not completely fully learn is there a compelling reason to add aperture? semrich Posted January 6, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 6, 2011 Has anyone looked at "Pixelmator" or have prior experience with it, is seems to do all of what I do with CS3 and it's only $29. as an initial offering.

Sounds like you have most bases covered, I also have most of these, but for the cost of 5 rolls of film I thought I would give it a go.

If Pixelmator is all it's cracked up to be, it sure is a bargain, the three reviews at the App store seem to agree. Looks like my Apple account will be another $29/£18 lighter tonight. Thanks Howie
DavidStone Posted January 6, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 6, 2011 Thanks for this Howie. I can see that they have also split up previously bundled applications, and are selling them separately for a very reasonable price. David
deirdre Posted January 7, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 7, 2011 FWIW, the US store price for Aperture is $79.99. I picked up my copy, which I'd been holding off on buying as I'd been doing a lot of travel and that's where my budget went.

The Aperture price is a serious shot across the bows of Adobe and Phase 1...an LR upgrade is $99. Incidently, check out toDNG in the App store Regards, Sandy
jplomley Posted January 7, 2011 Share #12 Posted January 7, 2011 I wonder when Adobe and Microsoft will offer their products for download through the App store. Once again, Apple is set to change the stage for how we purchase our software. One stop shopping, brilliant! Were there any other changes in 10.6.6 other than the addition of the App store? Michael-IIIf Posted January 7, 2011 Share #13 Posted January 7, 2011 When this was announced some time back I thought it was a cynical way for them to take control of the apps on our Macs. No longer able to download demos and share a friend's serial number - not that I would ever do that nor suggest anyone does it! But I must say if the prices shown there this week are here to stay then it will be a huge success. It's not just Aperture but I see many apps at considerably less than buying them 'conventionally' would have been. It's also much easier to impulse buy a novelty app for a fiver or a tenner when all one has to do is click one button. The inconvenience of having to download and extract installers, finding and entering credit card details, the risk of giving one's card details to an unknown site, obtaining the serial number, entering the serial number, tidying up and deleting the installer put me off many purchases. The ease of purchase with this store could be a bonanza for developers. Coming back to Aperture. I don't actually need it as I'm happy with LR3 but if that price is only temporary I'm tempted to grab a copy.
Howiepix Posted January 7, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted January 7, 2011 I have thought for a long time that the answer to people downloading hacks and cheap counterfeit software is for the price to be 'reasonable'. I understand that the hundreds of hours developing software has to be paid for and no one would deny that a profit is necessary to invest in future projects. Apple now have a huge global customers base and have quite rightly lowered the price of some key software, making it accessible to a lot more people. I am sure they will still be 'In the Money' as there is no physical product, packaging, warehouse storage and distribution which must reduce their costs, I just wonder if I buy a new Mac in a years time, can I reload the software to the new machine at no cost? Has anyone read the small print?
spylaw4 Posted January 7, 2011 Share #15 Posted January 7, 2011 What I find good about the App store is that for iLife and iWork you don't have to get the entire package, just the bits you really want. So e.g. no more Garageband or Keynote bloating the computer! @Jeff - all this comes as part of 10.6.6 a regular bug/security fix. @Howiepix - usually one can migrate all the software across from old to new computer so I expect that App store purchases will also transfer. Brian, I have just trawled through the T's&C's from Apple, It states "After you purchase an application, you can install it free of charge on every Mac you use". So I buy one licence and can have a copy on my imac and another on my mac book pro, I don't think Adobe will offer that any time soon!!

That's exactly what the license of Photoshop and Lightroom allows. Not only that, but with CS5 the keys will work on both Mac or Windows machines - Lightroom has always (as far as I can recall) used the same key for Mac and Windows. I stand corrected, I was unaware of that. Thanks for that Steve, I might even dust down my old Windows gaming machine as a Photoshop workstation. stunsworth Posted January 7, 2011 Share #19 Posted January 7, 2011 Howie, I think the unification of the keys only came with CS5, before that Mac and Windows machines had different keys.

This makes it unattractive for serious pp. Otherwise a decent and easy to use app, but not in the same pro league as Creative Suite IMO.
