Gentleman's Hatters!

This is Bates Gentleman's Hatters in Jermyn Street London where I buy my hats! Its an Aladin's Cave of a shop with every conceivable type of hat - pork pie, trilby, fedora, panama, bowler. beret - and impecabily civilised service. In the corner is a constantly steaming old kettle so they can steam your hat for you to bring up the knap on the fur felt. The presiding spirit of the shop is "Binks" - a stuffed cat that used to inhabit the shop in the 1920's. You can see him in his case in the second shot - smoking a cheroot of course and wearing a Top Hat!

Great composition with the repetition and feel of actual presence. That mirror in one is brilliantly placed, as is "The Butler".

:)

I haven't been to Jermyn Street in many years now but I reckon it the most civilized byway known to man for the shops there. Certainly every gentleman should know it at least once.

Thanks for sharing.

Funny how only Americans buy tattersall check shirts from St James's

:)

Somehow I doubt it's Americans who are keeping the last family-owned shirtmaker alive and prosperous. (The shirts are even made on-site, prices very reasonable.) Maybe you need to get out more? :)

It was a joke...

:)

But, you rarely ever see an Englishman wearing a shirt like that.

Guess you missed this one? :)http://www.leica-camera-user.com/people/4969-lock-hatters-1-a.html?highlight=lock+hatters

Don't know Bates, but know Richard Harvie rather too well. ;) Best country checks I've ever owned. Harvie & Hudson

Hi William!

What's one of those flat, checked hats like you have cost?

I am wondering about ordering one...would have to get the size thing sorted first, of course.

Do you think they would sell one to a country bumpkin like me?

:)

Thanks.

Those are probably my absolute favorite shirts Andy. I love 'em.

I've got a couple of shirts from T&A and some pajamas...those are pretty nice too.

Maybe William will take me along with him next summer and I can get back there?

:)

Thanks.

Mr. Stephenson will take your $$$. With a flat cap, shape of the head is less important. Hat sizes are roughly the same as ours. Best to measure your head in cm's , snug but not TOO tight. Mine are worn in open cars with a security cord of course... :)

Depends also on your taste and wardrobe. Lock's patented cloth is nice and "neutral". I have a gill lightweight in that cloth, but it's not on the website.

Only problem is..., the best stuff isn't on the website. You know, of course, the USD is almost worthless at the moment, right?

Not next summer, Allan. Ron and I are both broke and the MOG event is not to my taste. If I live long enough, the MOG is in June in Cornwall in 2008. Even if the event is below expectation, I'd expect 600 - 700 Morgans and the scenery. You will also get a tour of the Morgan Motor Co. earlier in the week.

You will have to hire your own ride as Ron has already spoken for the co-pilot seat and scouted the county last summer.

For once you will have to open your wallet, particularly if you have to bring SWMBO along. :D We eat and drink well and don't sleep in motels...;) We also run like mad all week. Start saving big-time now! June in Cornwall can be wet, BTW. Do you own any Barbour? :)

I can only imagine what Wooster's man would say about Americans and loud check fabrics. ;)

That was one of my all time favorite programs. Now the only thing we watch is the occasional HDTV show, and most of them are from England like the BBC proms and the Treasure houses of England (or some such name - they feature these incredibly magnificent old manor homes).

William, I want a picture of you wearing that hat in a Morgan!

Bill
