earleygallery Posted December 21, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted December 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Popped into Harrods for the Xmas puds (theirs are superb) and had a quick look in the photography dept. Â They had a silver and a black X1 on display. The black looks much nicer with the faux leather covering and uniform dial colouring. Unfortunately the silver version was suffering badly from skin peeling! Not good for their demo camera! Â The X1 looks very nice in the flesh though. No photos taken, so this is a purely cosmetic review. Â Harrods also had an M9, a few lenses, a 24mm viewfinder and the various panaleicas, and what looked like the full range of binoculars. h00ligan Posted December 22, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted December 22, 2010 I would kill for a harrod's pudding..it has been about 15 years since i've had one... Â Oh wait..something about a camera review.... Damn you for putting the pudding in my brain! Â My x1 is back tomorrow, I doubt they adjusted anything else but they said they would mke sure it was to factory spec...I'm just happy we reached a conclusion as to why I had sharpness issues. Â I've not had skin peeling despite using it in Arizona for 6 months..and it goes daily in a bag..so maybe it's humidity not heat.
NZDavid Posted December 22, 2010 Share #5 Â Posted December 22, 2010 Christmas puddings! We have them here, too, despite blazing hot summer weather, now nudging 30C. One of those imported English traditions. Still yummy with brandy butter! Â The X1. I'm still waiting to get mine back after dispatching it for sensor cleaning. About six weeks so far. Guest badbob Posted December 23, 2010 Share #7 Â Posted December 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The demo camera had peeling skin? What if Rolls Royces and Bentleys had doors and windows with crooked seams, the way some of those American Motors cars were delivered in the early 1970's? Would their buyers accept that? This is just amazing.

This is just amazing. Â Well, I do recall some sad times for our automobile industry in the early 70s leading to the K car. I also recall a host of issues with British Leyland cars in the late 60s and 70s thanks to Lucas electrical. As far as the X1 goes, I will deal with the peeling skin but shutter (pardon that pun) to think of electrical issues cropping up on these cameras as well! h00ligan Posted December 24, 2010 Share #9 Â Posted December 24, 2010 Our family Roller wasn't exactly reliable (it was a 79 iirc) but still, I'm surprised by peeling skin in a demo. It should be solved by now. I'm in the minority camp who prefers silver to black I guess. But it would be nice to have the better skin.

And I guess the skin is an easy enough fix so I am okay with the situation. The 'peeling" on mine is subtle and only pops back up after a couple of days. On the dial side of the LCD, I used the same 3M photo adhesive and it has held fine there for several weeks. Eventually I will re-do the left side and expect it will hold. Â I do like the look of the Black camera but tradition plays big in my assessment and this camera comes from the iii (Barnack Leicas) design most of which were silver. LuxBob Posted December 24, 2010 Share #11  Posted December 24, 2010 This is really a pudding thread, I've been rumbled  If I'd had a loose £1400 in my pocket I might have bought the X1 too.  Or you could have bought a ticket to Kiwi Land, taken your Harrods Xmas pud and made a lot of friends.  Might I ask what sort of covering people have for their Xmas puds?  And another Xmas pud aside, as an ex pat with a German wife and a multitude of friends, colleagues and associates from different countries, I find that it is only the Anglo community that likes xmas puds, my wife, daughter and other non Anglo friends view it similar to how I view Haggis (opportunity for another traditional side argument). We have had dinners where the Anglo hosts serves up the pud and while some of us are ecstatic others want to leave the table. Thus, while i think I have done a fair job in getting my immediate family and one or two friends to appreciate the delights of proper Fish and Chips, I see the job of doing same with Xmas pud as taking somewhat longer, especially as there is only a once a year opportunity. petewayne Posted December 24, 2010 Share #12 Â Posted December 24, 2010 I have a vulcanite covering on my Xmas pud and double cream on my Leicas. NZDavid Posted December 24, 2010 Share #13 Â Posted December 24, 2010 Or you could have bought a ticket to Kiwi Land, taken your Harrods Xmas pud and made a lot of friends... Â We'll throw the turkey on the barbie, put the bubbly in the ice bucket and see you for lunch. Brandy butter is waiting! Â We've got good fish n' chips, Scots brought Haggis (they shoot them in the hills round Dunedin), but our Marmite is slightly different than the English variety. startover Posted December 24, 2010 Share #15 Â Posted December 24, 2010 I just got the X1. Really like how compact it is. And the IQ is surprisingly good. Â But I do have a silly newbie question -- taking pictures here in New York at dusk, I noticed that with manual exposure (f/2.8, 1/30) the picture looked distinctly darker versus when I set it to A, A and the camera picked the same aperture and shutter speed (f/2.8, 1/30). Anyone know why? I don't remember my Nikon D90 doing that.
startover Posted December 24, 2010 Share #16 Â Posted December 24, 2010 Ah, the ISO selection in automatic mode, of course.
NZDavid Posted December 25, 2010 Share #17 Â Posted December 25, 2010 Sorry, can't quite see the relevance to puddings, but surely the pic shouldn't have been any darker in A mode -- or was the manual exposure more accurate? Â Anyway, as an adjunct to brandy butter I can heartily recommend pomegranate sauce -- delicious!
DwF Posted December 25, 2010 Share #18  Posted December 25, 2010 ....hmm those guys down under with fancy holiday fare  nice to have the conversation back to nuts and bolts like we serve in the U.S of....  Startover, I guess by your second post that you figured out what was wrong, but I would suggest with M mode, ball-parking the ISO say at 400 for dusk and going from there with the intention of maintaining as low ISO as possible. When I am working a shot, as an alternative to bracketing exposure, I will occasionally bracket ISO to lower than I might imagine possible in the hope that I might get a positive result (finer fabric is how I see it).  Also in M mode, I often set exposure at least 1/3 stop reading the scale that comes up on the LCD screen.  I look forward to seeing what you come up with in pictures  Enjoy your new camera!  David
