Shown before as 'Crossing the Rhine'. Can't say that it excited anybody but I still count it as one of my best of 2010. M8

Most of my friends would say "In that case we hope that you have a better 2011."

Bill’s shot - I very much like how the cognitive dissonance from this shot makes it seem to be in motion, which bothered Mitch but I find to be a strength. However, as Steve commented, I wonder if it would be even stronger rotated 180 degrees. It would still be strange (a plus), having the ceiling around him.

Virgil’s shot – Since Virgil joined us his photos have been well done, and he has been selective in what he posts. But since attending the workshop in NYC earlier this year, and spending time with Ben his shots have become more incisive and his processing almost achingly lovely. Those characteristics come to play beautifully in this shot.

Dave’s shot – Strong for the contrast of the white ship (well placed) and the quality of the grays. But I know I’ve seen stronger shots from you.

Lawrence’s shot – though I like the moment, joy and venue this is one of those blurred shots that do not make it for me. Perhaps it would if you could burn in some detail on the child’s head.

My submission – An excellent idea, Bill, and I appreciate all that you intend with it. Going back over my shots from 2010 I find many I like a great deal along with the dross (some of which I’ve posted on the Forum), which makes me think of how I respond when people ask me where the best place is that I ever visited. My reply is usually that they have to limit it to a category (such as venue for archaeology) to which I could give three selections. So one photo from any category is really tough. That said, I randomly picked this one from a group of 8 that included two landscape, two wildlife, two portraits and two architectural. This is at about 4300 meters in the Atacama Desert of Chile last January. The volcano (there are over 2000 of them in Chile) is significantly higher. The pond in front of it is a salt pond, and we stopped here for lunch. What a view.

LuxBob Very evocative, the title certainly helps to set the mood, this shot needs a title in my mind. Certainly the word "Impressionistic" comes to mind. I'm not sure about the electirc blue, but overall I like this as a whole

STU I relish the opportunity one day to see as much of the world as you do through the viewfinder!!

That said, the contrasting colors and textures really work well for me here.

Around the swimming pool.( I was lucky with this shot. Only the ball the kid playing with is in this frame. And his shadow of course. And on top my lovely granddaughter.

Mary Christmas to you all & greetings from me in my frozen country.

Bert.

Thanks John for commenting. I didn't burn it deliberately, in the original you could even make out her tiny glasses. Unfortunately, that was one detail of this that I let slip by when I got it to where I liked it. :)

I like the composition (with the minor exception of the placement of the man just behind the girl) and the long exposure and the mysterious flames that the bonkers Nocti-bokeh creates from the little lights. But I so much want to see the girl's face as the key point of the composition.

I remember your shot when it you put it up earlier. Then I didn't like the reflections, too busy. Now it works better for me. I like the juxtaposition of the bas relief and the angle of the carpet. The bridge reflection seems to draw the whole together.

Thank you: I'm glad it's working better this time. The busy-ness and the bridge were deliberate: I enjoy pictures where there's a formal composition but a lot going on in and behind it. When I first saw it on screen I was worried about the car at bottom right, but then realised that it (a) serves as a rock in the foreground and (B) echoes the diagonal from the relief and the carpet. I also enjoyed having a picture that is divided into (almost) equal quarters but isn't at all symmetrical.

Technical details: M8, 35mm Summicron v4, ISO160, shutter speed 1/90 so as not entirely to freeze the pedestrian. Maybe 1/60 would have been better.

Just to be clear - best shot with a "Leica"? Chris

In line with forum rules... Leica body, lens or both.

Keep 'em coming, and thanks for the comments on my shot so far. Just to reiterate - this is for the single shot that you feel is your best this year - the one single shot that you feel is worthy of putting up on your wall.

Regards,

Bill

It hasn't been a vintage year for me either, and my Leicas haven't had a large share of the little I've done. So this was an easy choice:

I like photos with numerous layers if well balance. For the most part this worked well but the car on the lower right did get in the way. Chris

This is very interesting - the shadow of the ball player is kinda spooky in context but makes the photo what it is. Chris

This one already is on the wall. :) But it has been taken a million times before ;)

My very best shots (IMHO) have not been with Leica cameras this year.

OK.

A bit difficult to choose, but I think this photo says it all...

Roma (Gipsy) kids helping each other.

Exposed to huge discrimination in society these kids know already, that by holding together

they can face the world in a better way.

Berte's shot - Delightful and slightly disturbing, like a de Chirico (largely due to the inclusion of the shadow).

Andy's shot - You already know I like this for composition, depth, contrast, mood and processing.

Prem's shot - More than just two boys, it also includes the sadness of leaving the one boy's eye undreated. terrific moment and processing.

Sylangui's shot - Welcome to the forum, and based on this shot (wonderful for subject, light, color, moment, depth and detail) I look forward to seeing many more of your photos.
