Robinyuill Posted December 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there. I am considering a case/cover for my M8 and looking for some advice. I have a Artisan Artist wrist strap on order (Christmas from a understanding Leica wife) and for my birthday in Jan she's offering a Luigi case. Any info or recommendations on the various models of cases he makes would be gratefully accepted. Regards from a snowy Edinburgh. Robin.

mgc2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Share #2 Posted December 12, 2010 Hi Robin Admittedly you can buy cheaper but I went for the Luigi Half-case in natural aged brown finish. This has a flap on the back which can be ondone with 2 press studs to expose the LCD. I love the case very much. I suppose at the end of the day it's all about personal taste but I think this finish compliments my chrome M8 a treat. Regards Colin
Guest Ming Rider Posted December 13, 2010 Share #3 Posted December 13, 2010 I have an Artisan Artist Black Half case. VERY thick leather, well made and built like a tank.

AbbeyFoto Posted December 13, 2010 Share #5 Posted December 13, 2010 I love Luigi cases for my film cameras but my case for the M8 was struggling to give the same firm grip due to the large cutouts at the rear, particularly when trimmed to accommodate a Thumbs-Up. Leica's protector approach is different - the sides are rigid. I started to revert to the protector but missed the built-in grip of the Luigi case. Recently I picked up a Leica grip for the M8 so I am currently using that without case. A Luigi case with rigid sides like the protector might be my ideal choice. mgc2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Share #8 Posted December 13, 2010 Hi Robin,I have, and recommend, the half case with built in grip.... Cases for Leica Digital.htm Nice birthday present! John I had actually meant to order the one from Mr Luigi with the grip but the one which arrived was the one with just the "bulge" (my mistake when ordering). However I feel the bulge is just perfect and provides a very comfortable yet positive grip. The sides of the case are very rigid and gives the body of the camera good protection. Some complain about it being a hassle having to remove the camera from the case everytime you want to remove the card or battery but I don't find this an issue. I know Edinburgh is quite a bit colder than Stornoway but I think the case helps with battery life too by keeping it a wee bit insulated! Hope this helps Colin
rickp13 Posted December 13, 2010 Share #9 Posted December 13, 2010 hi robin luigi 1/2 case, in your favorite finish, with half-round grip up front and removable LCD cover in the rear. there's a tripod mounting screw option, but that's up to you and your (in)frequent use of tripods etc. cheers rick
don_panko Posted December 15, 2010 Share #10 Posted December 15, 2010 Just to add another opinion.... I would recommend against getting any case. I tried a 1/2 case and found the camera awkward to hold. A postage stamp size piece of skateboard grip tape placed where your thumb normally rests provided a better grip and accessing the SD card or battery not impeded by a tightly fitted case. A case might protect the body from wear but to me that does not detract from the beauty of the camera. I have a loop style strap of webbing and a ring on the camera so that the whole rig stays safely under my jacket until ready to swing up for use. A case for the M8 is not really necessary or desirable, in my opinion.
RichardM8 Posted December 15, 2010 Share #11 Posted December 15, 2010 Hi Robin, I received my black Luigi half case 2 or 3 weeks ago. Gorgeously made, perfect fit, in a word superb. But now I'm not sure I like a half case. I can't get used to the 'fat & clumsy' feel it gives the camera. I doubt if I get used to it so if you're interested... I have the version in black leather, build in grip, detachable rear flap (LCD cover) and 'USB door'. Richard.
Krug Posted December 15, 2010 Share #12 Posted December 15, 2010 I am another very satisfied Luigi user - half case makes it easier for me to handle and grip and protects against the inevitable knock and the rest of the full case protects it properly when not in constant use......also it looks great and is totally in keeping with the ethos of the camera. Only one reservation - I find the tripod fixture in the Luigi case not to work well so I have a leica grip with a (slightly) modified Wimberly Q/R plate permanently attached which I switch to for the occasional tripod use - when I don't need a case anyway and it might get in the way. As an aside my Wimberley has safety stops at each end of the Q/R plate which the new RRS combined replacement baseplate/Q/R plate for M8 and M9 does not have...now maybe I am being over-concerned but I like that extra security when attaching/detaching from tripod. I have mentioned this to RRS as it would be easy for them to modify their design but no response so far !
squarenegs Posted December 16, 2010 Share #13 Posted December 16, 2010 Robin ...Luigi 1/2 with the longjohns style 'back door'. I use it closed with only the right snap done up so I can drop it with the flick of a finger should I have to do that primate thing. I can then button up quick before too many people have seen me do that nasty deed. Of course, any model Luigi case gets +++ marks for Italian style. It's hard to put a price on that! albertknappmd Posted December 19, 2010 Share #14 Posted December 19, 2010 Luigi all the way. The 1/2 cases are works of art.. I prefer the detachable back however... Albert
