A quick comparison from Leicas site: The red line is approximately where the lens ends without the shade. Real world size difference is quite big i think. The Lux is heavvier, have a larger diameter and is greater in length.

Indeed, I used to have the older Summilux ASPH. Once I got the Summicron I preferred it both for its handling and look and sold the Summilux. The new lens is even bigger than the older one. Below: the older ASPH Summilux on the left and the ASPH Summicron on the right.

Peter,

What is the hood on the summilux? It certainly looks better to me than the original hood for that lens. By the way, were the backfocus problems very bad?

regards,

Maurice,

I think I have been through most hood/cap configurations for the 35 ASPH Lux. Started with the flimsy original, with its self-discarding lens cap. Then the very robust 28 Summicron Hood and cap, which was a bit of overkill, although I would assume it could withstand a small explosion. I have finally settled on a Contax GG2 cylindrical metal hood and GK56 metal cap. Originals are quite expensive but you can get quite good copies on eBay. Looks very similar to what Peter is showing, except mine is a chrome 35 Lux and I am using the titanium Contax hood/cap.

Does anyone have a link to a side by side shot of the two so I can see the physical size difference?

Perhaps a good time to mention (again) Sean's useful site (no affliliation)...Welcome to ReidReviews Small, but worthwhile, annual subscription.

He offers pics on these and other 35 lenses (Voigtlander, Zeiss, etc) side-by-side, with and without hoods, as well as data on exactly how much of the viewfinder is blocked on various M cameras.

Maurice, no focus issues at all on the 35 Summilux ASPH, the lens was perfect except for a slightly loose aperture ring. (Caveat: I only use film M bodies.)

The hood is a 46W from eBay dealer heavystar. I have several screw-in metal hoods from this dealer and they are excellent and very inexpensive. Below is the 35 Summilux on the right, on the left is an E46 50/1.4 pre-ASPH with the most recent version of the 46W hood which as you can see has a very slightly different shape.

Why Leica can't consistently design decent hoods is beyond me; I had to buy the hood for the black paint 35/2 in the earlier picture because the one that came with the lens was useless.

Does it really make a real world difference if the lens is 15mm longer or shorter or if it is 100g more or less weight?

IMO as soon as you put a hood on those lenses the difference is not that big anymore.

I cant comment the Cron asph but had a 35 cron and a 35 asph lux today have the 35 Summarit and the 35luxII - without hood the Summarit is much smaller, with hood not that much of a difference.

The main disadvantage of the Lux IMO is price, and if we talk about the first version also focus shift.
