Adam Marelli Posted December 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had a chance to photograph two Japanese knife masters, here in NYC and found a number of similarities between the Knife world and the Leica world. I used an M9 and a 50mm Summicron for the event. The entire article is up at Adam Marelli Photo Let me know what you think! ( be gentle ) Best-Adam Welcome, dear visitor! euston Posted December 3, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 3, 2010 This is Jaap’s roundabout way of telling you that photos are supposed to be posted in one of the Photo Forums not the discussion forums. Technology & Industry would probably be the right place for this one. I expect where to post photos is written down somewhere but I’ve never come across it. I don’t see it in the site FAQ but I dare say I’ve missed it. I don’t mind commenting on the picture whichever forum it’s in. I like the idea of the shot and your technical execution of it but, given the subject, I would have liked to see more of the knife the master is making. stuny Posted December 3, 2010 Share #6 Posted December 3, 2010 Adam - This is terrific. Sadly, relatively few members look in the Technology section. This could go in the People section, if you like, where many more members visit. Let me know if you want me to move it. (stuart.nordheimer@opco.com) I look forward to meeting you. I work in midtown. jaapv Posted December 3, 2010 Share #8 Posted December 3, 2010 What I like: The composition The concentration on the faces The reflection of the spectators What I would change: I would dodge the faces to get some light in them I would try a black and white version. I don't think color adds anything in this case.
pauledell Posted December 3, 2010 Share #9 Posted December 3, 2010 Adam, A fine series with great captures of the knife masters at work and their expressions. I agree with Jaap's comments and think b&w versions may be even stronger. Paul
Washington Posted December 4, 2010 Share #10 Posted December 4, 2010 I enjoy your photograph and your observation. You will find it true that many, if not all, discrete special interest groups are similar.

Adam Marelli Posted December 5, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted December 5, 2010 Hey Jaap, I will try a BW version. Truthfully, I do very little black and white myself. While I love other people's pictures in black and white, it has never really appealed to me. The world is in color, so my pictures are in color. If you would like, I will send you the picture and see what you would do with it in BW? Consider it a collaboration. Best-Adam
Adam Marelli Posted December 5, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted December 5, 2010 Washington, You are right on, specialty groups have many overlaps. I found this one particularly funny considering the number of Leica's that end up in Japan. Someone said they have the highest number of Leica's per person in the world. I have not made it there yet to see for myself. Best-Adam
Adam Marelli Posted December 5, 2010 Author Share #14 Posted December 5, 2010 Euston, There were a few more shots of them on my site. The most amazing thing about watching them work is the rhythm of knife on the stone. I know that is a terrible way to put it, but after sharpening knives for three years now, I am still amazed at their touch. But videos on them are nearly impossible to find. Thanks for the feedback.
