Olsen - you should use the search function. Yes - it has been discussed at least a dozen times before - yes it has been put to Leica - yes they have answered - the issue is unresolved and sometime this year there will be a firmware update -the second actually - mitigating the problems a bit more. There is a PP fix - either Cornerfix of C1.

I have posted other examples under another thread here:

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/162559-m9-vc15-mm-red-edge.html

At the same day I took this one: M9 with VC 15 under the typical light condition that seems to provoke this: Sunshine, sea, snow, clear sky etc.

At the bottom of this page you will find how my 1Ds III is doing under similar conditions:

I have just gotten around to putting LCC profiles into C1, and the problem has vanished. Utterly and totally. For me the subject is closed. I am not even looking to Leica any more for new firmware.

Btw, Olsen, the M9 will also not show any red edge with DSLR lenses. I use the Fisheye Elmarit on the M9 without any trace of red edge. So the remark about the Canon is meaningless.

Jaap,

I can also show pictures taken with the CV 15 that have no Italian Flag Issue. No problem with that. Like interiors. It has to be sunshine, sea or snow in the picture to provoke it so that the red edge is visible.

Which version of C1 are you using?

Jaap--

Did you use a single profile for each lens? Or did you think it was better to profile a couple different apertures?

And how did you make the profiles--white wall, translucent glass, etc?

Thanks.

I made a series at varying exposures and I just shot in the general direction of an overcast sky holding a sheet of white paper right in front of the lens. It was the CV 15 and it worked like a charm. Because I took at varying shutter speeds I have three in C1 of different strength.

Jaap, did you try shooting the profiles at different apertures? I haven't got to it myself, but it seems to me is that the red edge effect is more intense with the lens wide open (I am not entirely sure as I have not made a "controlled experiment" yet). Why do you think varying shutter speed makes sense? Is it because with a less exposed profile shot you will get a more pronounced correction effect? My thinking is that the correction effect should be "just right" and that is exactly the same for any correctly exposed image. This is why I shoot the target, then use the white pointer in C1 on the center of the image (on the assumption that the image is "clean" in the center). That leaves me with an image of the target with the center set at value 255 but the edges showing vignetting and any color casts. I then have C1 analyze such a processed image as the target, name it and use it on the images shot under the same light. It works fine for me that way but I am not at all sure that my way is the correct or best one (I admit to not having read the C1 manual...) and I am curious as to the thoughts behind your method. Regards, Martin

Martin--You refer to "the target." Is this one of the translucent glass plates others say Phase One offers to calibrate their medium format equipment, or something else?

Thanks!

I won't answer for Martin, but the Phase One plate is the one I use - and love!

+1

I use C1 Pro just updated to 6.1 this morning and then send the 16 bit TIFF files to CS5 for final adjustments. I have 2 M9's, and I take 4 shots with both bodies, and lens ( FL 35 mm and less) combo's encompassing f stops, wide open to f8, with +1 exposure compensation. This is more than enough, and it is then stored within C1 Pro for future use. It really is a single step in the PP workflow, I just save it as a user preset for the rest of the shots in the set.

Jaap, I love the idea of just using a white sheet of paper :D I still use the pocket LCC from Phase One, costing only $17.95 direct from their website.

I use the white card that came with my x-rite color target (there was a second card in the package, white on one side and medium gray on the other). I hold it in my hand, make sure that it receives the same light as the subject and just take a picture of it, making sure that my thumb is not included :). I do not focus on the card at all, just make sure that it fills the entire frame. I find it quite convenient because it fits nicely between the canvas and the padding in the billingham hadley bag that I use and does not get in the way when not used. Martin

I am going to use my Expodisc to do the C1 profiles for the WATE, which is the only lens I have a real issue with. Red edges are detectable in extreme conditions with my 25 Biogon as well but really only by mousing over and I can live without correcting that.

I will have to go to one of my older Macs to download the 6.1 version of C1, as all 3 of our Macs running Slow Leopard are suffering from the Javascript issue, where Javascript buttons on certain websites, e.g. Phase One, just don't work. As an Apple Developer, I have been in correspondence with Apple on this issue for the last 3 months but they have told all of us who are having the issue that they cannot duplicate it, so are no longer interested and have closed the investigation.

Sadly over the 8 years I have been using Macs, Apple has become an increasingly arrogant and customer unresponsive company, which I think is an attitude that comes from the top. I, therefore, would not be too sad to see the retirement of Mr. Jobs. They used to take their beta developers seriously but no longer. I hope that with increasing success, Leica does not go the same way. I do think they are still listening to their customers at present and I am hopeful that the next FW update will do something for the WATE.

Actually, the C1 instructions tell us to use a translucent white object in front of the lens. I read somewhere the Expodisk was not suitable for Cornerfix, it may well be the same for C1. I will use a bright white piece of foam from a Heliopan filter box. I found the intensity of the profile varies with the exposure, giving one a range of profiles for different light and aperture. Using the aperture to create different ones may well work the same way. I'll be off to mountains and snow the coming two weeks, so plenty of time to experiment. :)

"Sadly over the 8 years I have been using Macs, Apple has become an increasingly arrogant and customer unresponsive company..."

I hear this from several sources.

I speculate that this does NOT come from Steve Jobs, but a general attitude from a range of US companies. The mantra now is 'profit'. Along with thousands of Scandinavians, I have just given up the new Iphone as a cell phone. It is not reliable enough as a telephone since it constantly looses contact with the base stations. This spells catastrophe for me at work. Servicing or any technical support I could just forget. When complaining I was told which enormous success this Iphone was internationally. I have given my IPhone to my wife, who does not use her phone at work, while I am back with a Nokia phone. Mac is also in conflict on a range of reject issues with the Norwegian governmental Consumer Protection Agency. Which is regarded as a scandal. You don't mess with those people unless you want to destroy your reputation.
