Hello everyone, I found the filter uv / ir used from a Leica dealer. The filter has arrived yesterday. Inside there are instructions that read: "to use the filter with the LEICA M8 are needed Leica lens with 6-bit coding. make sure that your leica has a firmware version 1.10 or higher in the main menu and select voice recognition goal. It is in the submenu on the variant with uv / ir. now I ask you kindly that it is more convenient to set the camera as my Summicron 35 (matr. 3.60x.xxx) encoded.

Stefano,

Welcome to the forum!

I've had my M8 since February 2007 and it's been set to "UV/IR On" ever since I've had it with both coded and uncoded lenses. I leave it at this setting in case I forget to switch it back and I haven't noticed a problem.

(I hope this answers your question.:o)

Pete.

Welcome from me as well, Stefano. :D

I do the same thing Pete does, and also leave the camera set to UV/IR. Usually, that works fine.

Try it and see. :)

With a 35mm, you're right on the edge of where coding is necessary for best results. That is, at 28mm and shorter, it's pretty important to let the camera know which lens is mounted; at 50mm and longer, the coding won't do much as far as image quality goes.

Eventually you may want to have the lens coded, just so you can see the lens ID in the EXIF.

But just put the filter on and shoot it. If you've got questions about the result, post them here!

I hope that helps!

Welcome to the forum!

There is an "M8 Photography" section for sharing images shot, naturally, on M8 bodies - the link is at the top of our page. There is also an image sharing section of the Leica User Forum subdivided not by camera, but by the type of image you're sharing - Landscape, Portrait, etc. If you're having specific image or camera or lens issues it's fine to include illustating images in posts to the equipment forums, although it's my understanding that the Forum's 'Management' prefers that threads for 'just' sharing images be placed in a Photo Sharing section and not directly in the M8, M9, or other equipment sections.

Stefano, I would also like to welcome you aboard the forum. I usually follow the same procedures as described by my fellow members. However, if you like to shoot B&W at night, I find that it's better to remove the IR filter, as small flares might appear from the light bouncing between the surface of the lens & the IR filter. You can leave the settings the same, with no real effect, as long as you intent to convert to B&W. Good luck with your new M8 & I will look forward to viewing your work on the Forum.

Benvenuto nel forum, Stefano !!!

... ti è scappato un "voice recognition" che è un "lens recognition", naturalmente ... ;)... we will see if in M-10 they will implement the capabilty to set lens recognition speaking loud and clear "Summicron-Three-Five !" :D

Apart Jokes, the best and simplest way is indeed to keep always lens recognition "ON + UVIR".
