I have seen lately some reports here on the LUF about users having trouble with Sandisk cards and I was wondering if this is with the same version where I had these problems with.

Don't the real things have a notch at the bottom? Yours look like counterfeits.

Hi,

My first post here, although I have been reading since I got my M9 two months ago and I've already learned so much.

I have two of exactly the same cards as the OP and they both fail on the M9. I am 100% certain they are genuine as I bought them from the dealer who sold me my M9 and they only deal with the authorized distributors for all their products. I have used these cards in several other cameras and they work perfectly for both stile and video. But not in the M9, even after several in camera format passes. I may get 6-12 shots before they fail. The problems are the same on the older and newer firmware.

I have 4x 8GB extreme cards that I bought at exactly the same time, from the same shop, and they never fail. I have taken about 4000 images in the last two months and not had a single problem with these cards in the M9.

So, to me it is a simple compatibility issue. I will be testing, thoroughly, any new cards before I trust them in the M9. If they fail I'll just use them in another camera. I do hope Leica get this sorted. But there are definitely cards that work just fine.

Welcome :)

As Andy says, your experience is valuable. Please share it.

Well the headline is that Leica admits a Sandisk compatabilty problem but all it does is reference the email corresponence in which they note that they're looking into the issue. Creates lots of site traffic for the site with that headline.

Thanks for the link, Mike! The headline sure doesn't match the contents of the article, though, does it?

I really like the disclaimer "picture for illustration purposes only," as if they were saying, "Here's the perpetrator or someone who closely resembles him." :)

Very interesting that Leica has responded but SanDisk hasn't. That should calm those who keep saying Leica is unresponsive, but probably won't.

I agree that the headline is misleading - there is a world of difference between investigating and admitting that there is a problem. At least Leica has now recognized that there is a potential issue and is taking action publicly, which at least gives some reassurance.

If there wasn't such a confusing amount of different threads on the same topic with so many postings in them we might remember that the news is already more than a fortnight old:

From a mail from Leica to a user, pucblished here on 12. July:

Extreme Pro is a new card by San Disk with "UHS" standard. In principle they should be backward compatible. Meanwhile we had a few requests of customers, who had problems with these cards. Our quality control department is insistently working on a (firmware-)solution regarding the compatibility with these card standard.

Based on the AP report, the latest Leica statement seems to encompass all SD cards, not just the newer UHS ones.

I don't think so, because the older Sandisk 16gb ultra (class 4) cards that I bought in 2009 and the newer Transcend 16gb (class 10) cards that I bought after the problems with the newer Sandisk 16gb ultra cards, work still flawless. Even with the latest firmware.

So I stick for the time being with the Transcend cards, they are also much cheaper then the Sandisks.

Quote from the AP article:

"A spokesman for Leica's product management team told Amateur Photographer: 'We have received a number of enquiries about SD card compatibility in the last weeks, in particular in relation to new SanDisk cards.' "

It is not clear from that whether the new Sandisk cards referred to are the UHS ones, but it does not rule out any other manufacturers or types either. Whilst the blog extract in the article did relate specifically to UHS, there is a lot of inference rather than actual facts.

Yeah, part of the problem is that it clearly isn't *all* Sandisk cards let alone all SD cards; I've used multiple 2GB Ultras and Extreme 3s and earlier 4GB SD HC Extreme 3s in all my Leica cams, DMR, M8 and M9 without any problem at all.

Jamie,

I would like to commend you for your reporting both positive and negative cases depending on what functionality in the M9 you used.

I hope others will follow your example. I certainly will.

Thank you, K-H.

This is not an SD card problem. Both M8 and M9 do this with 16GB cards. I used the same cards with a Canon 5D II and haven't had any problems with them, meanwhile both M9 and M9 freeze up every now and then. New firmware did not help. And last picture taken right before the freeze is gone. If I knew the M9-P upgrade would fix this , I would gladly pay up.
