Impact of substantial firmware improvements on the second hand market

Having been considerin selling my x1 (but willing to wait for the firmware since prices have already dropped so much) I see quite a selection on eBay and others. I'm thinking, if the firmware holds the improvements just reported on...we are going to see a lot more happy x1 users and far less of them for sale.

Thoughts?

No real point to the thread I guess..I just cant help but think real zone focusing options/hyper focal scale and faster af would pretty much remove or substantially lessen the two biggest limitations of the camera.

Hi Edward,

If the firmware modifications do turn out to significantly improve focus speed/operation then I suspect some people who were previously on the fence or not interested may well buy the camera.

While I would expect this to result in being able to sell a second hand X1 quicker I do not think it will move the used price upwards.

I would agree completely that the camera would have much more resale value because fewer would be available. With significant firmware improvements, a lot of people would be less inclined to sell their X1 to buy the Fuji X100 coming out next year.

Second hand market js.

Right, since the price new has not changed, the price used will not either... that's my point. With any current camera, you should get about 70%-80% of the original price when you sell used regardless of firmware updates. This is a niche camera no matter what, so its pool of potential buyers is small to begin with. I think you guys are making it out to be a camera that is readily available on the used market at super low prices, when it isn't the case.

People who want an X1 now will buy it. However, you are probably right in assuming more people will want the camera later after the magic firmware comes out. That just means your camera will sell quicker, not for more money.

I disagree. I think happier people = less for sale used = better resale.

if the firmware improves things substantially, resale would be irrelevant to me.

one thing that hasn't been discussed (probably because everyone is shooting raw) is the ability to turn off NR. the x1 smears like a 2 year old fingerpainting. I'd rather see the noise.. but again, doesn't matter if shooting raw.. but it does matter on the off chance one actually needs to use the strange antishake, which of course requires jpg.

Edward, could you be a bit more realistic with your crit of the X1? It is a very good camera by most peoples standards, and the resale price is close to the new price - VAT (or sales tax in your area). It does not resemble the work of a child.

It is a good camera. The noise reduction applied in camera is not good however, which again suits most people most of the time who shoot below iso 800 or in raw. I was only adding that it would be a benefit to have the choices of disabling it.

Used prices right now are about 25% less, which is about standard as js stated.

This wasn't meant as a critique, just some thoughts on the impact of the reported improvements pending. If you look at your images with noise reduction on, you will see the smearing..again, not a problem when shooting raw...which many will.

I,m one of those considering the purchase of an X1 and constantly reading all these positive and negative threads (?).

So how do you make these "firmware" improvements?

Is it a computer connection or does camera go back to dealer for some intricate electronic gizmo to be replaced at even more cost?

What I suppose I really want to know is should I buy now or wait and buy when the latest firmware has been introduced.

Yes, very easy!

Also, please understand the issues discussed are just that - a discussion. No camera is perfect and the x1 is no different.

Some people vehemently defend any criticism, while some blanket statements about it being horrible. I see positives and negatives and just want to discuss them (which many take as bashing).

If you haven't yet read the impressions of firmware 2.0, it's worth a read for sure. Something for x1 owners to happily anticipate.

Let's wait and see how fast FW 2.0 is going to make the AF. Ricoh did a remarkable job for the A12, with the AF now being significantly faster and giving the camera/lens module a new life. If Leica brings the X1's AF to the same level, it will feel like a new camera and make it more useful and desirable.

I tried to sell my GXR A12 earlier in the year because of annoying AF perfomance (speed hunting, inaccuracy), but after the latest FW upgrade played with the thought of adding the new 28mm module and selling the X1 instead. However, I'll wait with the final decision until FW 2.0 is available. Provided AF will be as fast as the GXR's, the Leica will be a keeper. Eventually, there is still no alternative in sight when size/weight/IQ/UI are the decision criteria (no, the new Fuji is not one, it's to bulky).

The new Fujian isn't one because it doesn't exist )

Not even a working prototype leaves a lot of things to change and unknowns. Dnt get me wring if they deliver all around, it will be a winner, bunt who knows if they will even deliver in part.

It's all just bs...there is no firm wear update because its not possible. It can't be done. We can't get there from here. In fact, there is no X1 CAMERA at all. The existence of this camera has been a case of mass hysteria. Wake up people....get a Ricoh!

Sheesh....

Agreed, a "firm wear update":) is rather impossible to do, in contrast to firmware updates, which are done frequently.

Installed the new firmware today... the X1 is now the most perfectest camera ever conceived.

I thought the new fw was not out yet. Is it available somewhere?
